Does anyone know if you can 'wire-up' a screen from a laptop to run from a standard PC?

In laptops they leave out alot of the electronics so the graphics chipset drives the LCD directly rather than going to VGA or DVI and then to the LCD.

Other than running it from another laptop, nope. There is no cheap option unfortunately. Those LCDs are designed to run from a laptop and nowt else.

No worries :)

If it was that easy I would have done it already!

After scouring literally hundreds of websites, i found that it can be done, but you need a matching LCD controller, they cost about £50+p&p, so by the time you buy all the gear, then all the time and effort wiring it, it will almost the same price as getting a normal screen. Oh well. :(

for what TFT's cost these days just go buy one. I got a 12.1" TFT a while ago for £50. Worked great until i blew it up! You could get a new 15" from a computer fair for just over £100 from a computer fair.

That'll be from a computer fair, then! LOL

I think 15" would be far too big for a bravo...lol

I was looking in the region of 9-13". And VGA if possible, but not too worried about that at the moment.

If anyone finds any good www's please let me know.

The cheapest one i could find so far is £99, but that was only 5.6", i would want something a bit bigger.

also...has anyone ever tried one of these?

Hi,

Dont bother with a laptop screen, they are too big and it will be a bitch in the long run.

You've got two options:

Buy a screen that will come out from the dash, it will fit in the same slot as a cd player etc. They can be motorized (press a button and out they come!), or pulled out manually. The advantage of this is that they can be hidden away easily, and generally neater than other solutions. However, the motorized versions tend to be quite pricy. And, to my horror, some models (most) when they come out from the unit go below the bottom edge of the unit. With a Bravo this is a real problem as the unit is sunk back in the dash! They retail between £190 to £1000 for a well known named brand like alpine or panasonic. You wont get a good deal on one in this country, best place is to look to america. They have good solutions for around £200-£400.

Or

Buy a stand alone monitor, they come in casing and come with a special stand. This is by far the easiest option, you can pick up a good one for about £100 and screw the stand to your dash, or whatever and just plug it in and your away. The drawback is that you have to take it with you when you leave the car, as long as you dont mind your car being broken into every 5 mins! But the price sold it for me. i can't justify spending 5 times as much just cause it comes out of the dash.

The added feature of buying a stand alone monitor is that you can buy a touch screen modual for about £100. This will allow mouse and keyboard free usage and is exceptional. Add this touch screen to your in-dash monitor and your talking serious moular.

Oh and another thing. Most of the monitors you will see for sale only have RCA cables as their input for video. This proves a real problem with clarity and sharpness of picture. The true VGA monitors are expensive, but they will give you much better colour, clarity and sharpness.

If i was you I would get a stand alone monitor, touch screen modual with normal RCA inputs. Just get some music software that is specifically designed for carputers (which are already available on the net, for free!) and your away.

Email me if you have any q's

you can't honestly expect me to remember what ive written in the middle of a sentence by the time i'm at the end i cant remember the middle! lol

I've never used one of those usb gps things. you used to have to use special software which was pap compared to autoroute etc but they now work with pretty much any of the navigation software. A lot of the software will only show you your current position though and will not speak directions so look into the software first. They are about £100 new with software so don't bid too much.
