Hi all.

My first post (WOO!) - my Bravo 1.8 S reg overheate yesterday and pee'd out 2L of water from the expansion tanks cap. Although my internal heater is running warmish rather than hot, its not dead cold - so im thinking thats working. After driving around for a bit (temp gauge at 50%) i pulled over had a look and my fan wasnt spinning.

When I get home, I thought I'd check the fuse. If its not that, can anyone suggest a cost effective procedure that i can use to figure out which bit may replacing? (eg. can i bypass the fan switch to see if the fan motor actually works? etc)

Instructions would be much much appreciated as well =)

Thanks in advance.

Regards

ur thermo thingy lol...cant remeber what its called, they seeze up from time to time, if u take it off and give it a little bang and just play with it, opening the flaps abit, it should work again...if not, just buy a new one...

PS- i know it sounds a litle wrong...lol but its got good intensions ;)

Cheers shaun. i'll try that - any advice on getting to it? do i pull of the whole unit and look inside? (how does the thermostat casing come off?)

Apply 12V directly across to the fan connectors, and see if its working first
Without the fan, you shouldn't really overheat when moving at a reasonable speed...

its just held on by a couple of bolts, just take the whole unit off and mess about with it...be careful u dont break anything, that should do, it worked on my 1.6, but in general..most cars are the same really....

just follow the pipes coming from ur radiator and that should lead u to the thermostat

I know this might sound daft but im sure some1 told me that the fan does kick in till the engine more or less over heats(hense to cool it down). Since his engine temp is sat at normal ish it wouldnt really work would it.
Ive only ever seen or heard my fan work once and that was when my engine overheated due to a faulty thermostat £10 and it was sorted.

Fan should cut in round about 1 notch above half way IIRC.

No slaps Emma, You got it right, When car is moving the fan won't be needed as the air will cool it. Stuck in traffic, idling, the fan might cut in. My ecu controls the temp that turns on the fan

thats what i said... ;)

Yeah Buzz, Thats right! Ran my car for 12 months without the fan working at all. (Mk1 radiator on a Mk2) Did not know anything was wrong untill I took it for its Second MOT. He had the engine running for 20 mins and it overheated. Took it to an auto electrician. Found the trouble.

like i said, its the thermostat, its seezed up which means its not letting water around the engine not allowing it to cool down then it overheats :)

Hi Rich! Do you have a thermo switch halfway down the right hand side? I have. It had a cable running to it The electrician disconnected that, He said the mk2 did not use that, There were 2 cables a Yellow one to the fan (wrong) he told me that cable had something to do with the airbag. The black cable going to the switch, (wrong) He put direct to the fan. Everything works fine now. The redundant yellow cable is Just tied up out of the way

my fan only kicked off once after i had bin giving it some real stick for about half a hour... never saw or heard it working again. thermostat is best bet
