Technical Faint whining noise from gearbox

Hi there,
I drive a Punto 55 s manufactured in 1997.
Recently, I've noticed a faint whining noise whilst driving. When I depress the Clutch, the whining stops, which makes me think it's the Gear Box.

When the car is stationary, in neutral gear and engine running, I held the gear lever gently to left and right hand side (without trying to engage gear) and I hear the same whining sound as when I'm driving.

When I put my ear close to the gear nob, I can hear, without ear touching, the whining noises. When I press the gear lever down, as if to carry out the first action in engaging reverse gear, the whining is less audable.

Is this normal. I don't remember this noise before. I have topped up the gear box oil a number of months ago and there seems to be no leaks. Is this a Punto thing?

i'd get the gearbox oil 'changed', as chances are it may not have been done?

Could it be the gearbox bearings, symptons sound familiar to when mine went bang.

Might be noisy clutch release bearing, this can be quite common for punto's.

This may sound daft, but the gearbox on my Punto does not look like the gearboxes featured in my Haynes manual.

My mate and I (mate is well up on cars) tried to follow Haynes instructions on how to renew gearbox oil. Basically, (as per Haynes manual) we drained the gearbox oil from a 13mm nut. There was only about 1/4 of a litre of oil came out. We were concerned as the Haynes and Punto Driver's Manual stated it takes 1.65 litrs of oil. We then tried squirting the new oil into the gearbox via the 12mm alen key plug hole. It just came back out and the amount to fill up the gearbox was about a 1/4 of oil. The whole situation didnt make sense. is there another gearbox fill up point . Is the Haynes manual out of date and my gearbox using a different oil renewal method.

Forgot to ask. Is the clutch bearing expensive to fix and is the job an urgent one?

its a wait till it goes job, gearbox off and replace the whole kit at same time.

cluchplate, bearing and presure plate is under £50

i wouldnt worry about it too much, change oil and if that makes no diffrence turn the radio up,

i have had a whine in my gearbox since i got my car 18months ago, i only get the whine when driving in 6th gear between 40-45mph after that it goes and cant here it. so i dont worry about it.
