Hi, my 2001 2.8iDTD has failed it's MOT on the exhaust. The garage won't touch it and said it needs to go to a specialist - apparently it needs a full system and "doesn't have a normal exhaust system". They missed a huge hole (could fit your hand in it) in the back box last year which I patched up so hopefully it just needs a back box.

Does anyone know the best place to find an exhaust for one of these? I have found one that fits a 2.8 from 94-02 with engine code 8140.43S but I've got a feeling that might be the JDM engine code?

Thanks for any help.

Engine series number/code should be on the chassis/vin plate.
Sounds a bit strange the garage cannot fit an exhaust?
Exhaust for 94-02 should be pre JTD (common rail)

Thanks @bugsymike, it's still at the garage so I don't have access to it at the moment.l but I will have a look when I pick it up.

It also failed on a shock and CV boot and they said they can't do any of the work so sounds like they just can't be bothered.

Nothing over complicated, but you will need a good large socket set to remove the hub nut for CV boot and it is fairly heavy engineering.:)
Some have a plastic CV boot which needs a good tool to fit the special clips tight.
Apart from that the principle is the same as a standard car, just a bit heavier all round, so good jack and stands etc.

The 2.8idTD, engine code 8140.43, was manufactured until 2001, the common rail version 2.8jtd, engine code 8140.43s was introduced in 2000, and manufactured until 2006. The 8140.43s is the same basic engine but with sensors added for the electronic engine management. High pressure fuel pump, and injectors will of course be different, but what else was changed?
The statement "doesn't have a normal (standard?) exhaust system, raises the question that the OP's vehicle may be a motorhome with modified chassis, and proprietary exhaust system.

Sorry I should have said it's a coachbuilt motorhome. Thanks @Communicator re the engine code, that confirms the exhaust I was looking at is for the common rail as it's 8140.43s. I think I'm going to take it to a motorhome specialist I know of and get his opinion on the best way forward.

It can still be for a pre JTD as often Motorhomes were not built to exact Reg. number dates.

I am not convinced that the exhaust system will differ between the two engines, both of which were fitted to the x230 model. The later x244 model was basically the same vehicle.
There are manufacturers of custom exhausts, often using stainless steel. For examples see here.

Unless it is different due to an extended body on the MH, but as you mention an exhaust can easily be made to suit, we often did in the past just with mild steel exhausts, heating up pipes to shape etc.

I think that rather than length, the problem may be due to a lowered chassis, of which the popular Alko may be an example. My vehicle is a PVC, so exhaust is standard.

Member @Ocwobio has an "A" class motorhome, which includes an extended chassis. Perhaps he could advise as to whether his exhaust system is an OEM part, or custom built.

Ok thanks, I don't know much about exhausts but assumed there may be sensors etc on a JTD that would not be on a iDTD.

The exhaust is fairly short and comes out the side a few inches behind the drivers side door. I could be wrong but I think from memory it has a Cat (or at least another box) on the passenger side which is where the hole was. If it's of any interest it's a 2001 Rollerteam Pegaso 181. I have attached a picture of an identical van, you can just about make out the tip underneath the first marker light.

Some vehicle whilst they didn't have a cat, they did have a particulate filter, so although they look similar they do not have any extra pipework for pressure sensors etc.
If system is short and exits just after drivers door it sounds a fairly simple system so I don't know why Mot guy was being awkward.
Hopefully it is just a case of fitting the tail or final box that had the previous repair done and leave the other "box" as it is.

No sensors on exhaust of 2.8jtd. The rear box is transverse and both inlet and outlet pipes are on RHS end. My standard x244 2.8jtd exhaust exits in the position that you have described.

On attached photo of my 2.8jtd, you can just see part of the spring loaded exhaust joint at the extreme RHS of photo.

Your photo looks identical to the fitting that was on my 1997 2.8iDT that I used in my boat.
The exhaust bellmouth was held by the springs against a rounded fibre seal/gasket.
I thought it was a good idea compared with the stainless steel flexible section on many transverse engines that always seemed to blow where as the Ducato one kept firm seal tension whilst allowing a degree of movement.

As mentioned by Communicator- I have an A class, and had a full stainless system made for it, from the turbo back. It's a 2.8JTD thus a very simple system. The exit is on the nearside, as the original one fitted by Burstner in 2005, was slightly modified. Probably due to some arcane TUV provision requiring the outlet to be away from the pavement side in Germany. I know that TUV at one time, stated motorcycle exhausts had to exhaust parallel to the ground, or inclined upwards at 15 degrees. No deviation was permitted. Crazy. On the age of van you have, the system is very basic, and even if modified, can easily be knocked together well from standard pieces, with someone who can be bothered. Therein lies the rub!
If yours does not have a modified chassis, i.e. Alko, then it should be a doddle.
Mine was done by these people https://www.longlife.co.uk/Longlife-Chester it was IIRC £440 ish about 8 years ago. It has a lifetime guarantee on it. They did it while I waited (slept in it actually as I was straight off night shift!). They have branches in plenty of places.
Failing that, speak to the bloke in Communicators ebay link.

Mine is going for MOT today, so if I can, I'll try and get pics from underneath if it helps. Meanwhile. I have pix of the old one, I'll look for them and post if I find them.
