Hi
I have a 2002 fiat ducato camper with 2.8 diesel .
When reving the engine towards 2500 rpm the engine is under control but as i rev towards 3000 the engine then races until taking the foot off.
Can anyone throw any light on this. Has this happened to anyone.
Any help will be appreciated.

Hi Ray,

Welcome to the forum.

I am afraid that you may have not been sufficiently specific regarding the engine details. May I suggest that you check against the heading "Motore" on the VIN plate. You could alternatively consult the V5C, but errors are not unknown. My apologies if the code is 8140.63 indicating a 2.8D.

Possible codes are 8140.63 for 2.8D, 8140.43 for 2.8idTD, and 8140.43s indicates the 2.8jtd.

If your engine is in fact a 2.8jtd, then have you checked for fault codes?

@bugsymike , @jackwhoo

Yes, as @Communicator and @jackwhoo say we need engine code and also details re exactly when engine high revving happens, possibly which gear, where driving, etc.
This way we may be able to guide you better.
Earlier engines are mechanically controlled and later being ECU (computer )controlled have different issues.
If the revving is unrelated to the engine then as suggested the clutch may be the issue which is something more likely to occur under load pulling up hills in higher gears to start with and as it gets worse the clutch will slip in the lower gear and more often, also you may notice a strong smell from the engine area. :)

Hi Guys, sorry for long time reply due to illness. okay now. Okay so the engine is 2.8jtd. The gearbox was recently overhauled and a brand new clutch assembly fitted ti eliminate that. The revving I refer to is when parked in neutral. you rev up slowley and after 2500 rpm it accelerates quickly above 3000, the same thing happens when driving, but is not the clutch slipping for reasons given.
Strangely, to givE you some idea of the model and age, this engine has a MAP sensor not a MAF sensor, because this year was optional for an egr. The reg is PN52JKU . Not sure if i can plug in anywhere for any fault codes.

Are you sure it is a 2.8 JTD with ECU as being a Motorhome some were earlier models late registered and it could be on the changeover from the Bosch injector pump with the four high pressure metal pipes going to the injectors of the 2.8iDT engine, they also do not have electric plugs on the injectors.
If it was the earlier version the fault could mean the injector pump required overhaul as sticking internally unless a mechanical linkage issue, where as the later ECU controlled engines you are looking for an electrical fault.

definitly 2.8 jtd without EGR fitted and with BOSH MAP. begining to think vacume pipes to turbo or the or waste gate actuator sticking.

Other than on the power version, Sofim 8140.43n, the 2.8jtd does not have a vacuum pipe to the turbo. The waste gate is controlled to limit the maximum boost pressure via tapping from the compressor output.
Is the base vehicle an x230, or an x244 model? This will define the nature of the OBD port. The model can be found from the first three numbers of the VIN, which will start either ZFA230.......... or ZFA244....... Alternatively the 230 has reverse below fifth, while the 240 has reverse next to first.

Fair enough JTD.:)
I am less inclined to think turbo or vacuum side, but why don't you disconnect vacuum if possible to eliminate it, engine should still be able to rev up and down, just with less grunt.
It may be possible to leave vacuum alone but pull off the turbo pipe at inlet manifold if you are sure no muck can be inhaled into engine, again as an elimination test.
If yours is "fly by wire" throttle then connections and earthing can be worth checking.
