Hi guys,

I need a bit of advice on the brackets holding the exhaust system in place. I had to have everything behind the cat replaced a month ago after it corroded through and fell off while travelling up the A1. Since then I've noticed a slight knocking sound when starting starting up, but tonight it became much worse and there was an obvious knocking when going over speed bumps and braking.

Turns out that the bracket holding the last section (the "out" pipe behind the last silencer, just in front of the back bumper) is very loose and probably about ready to fall off. How does this attach to the subframe and how easy is it to secure properly? Please bear in mind that I've got limited tools and experience and the only jacking option I have is the one for replacing the wheels.

Am I better of securing this with some wire until I can get it back to the garage or is there something simple I can do to to fix it properly?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

exhausts are held up with rubber hangers, have a look you should be able to see to hangers where it holds onto, just needs a new hanger i imagen.

Jus tbeen out to look at the problem and found that the rear of the exhaust is secured by a plate that is bolted on to the subframe. Spent a bit of time trying to secure it temporarily with some wire until my neighbour, who I think is a forklift mechanic, came out to see what was wrong. He took one look at it, decided it was an 8mm bolt and was back in a couple of minutes with a bolt and a flexible ratchet. Took him less time to resecure it than it took me to pack up my few tools.

So, exhaust now secured and one very happy bunny here. :D

Hi,

I have a similar problem... on way back to the car yesterday I noticed something hanging underneath, near the passenger rear door. I had a look and discovered it was a rubber fitting for the exhaust (quite near the edge of the car near the hinge of the rear door). One side of the rubber 'band' was split so it was only attached to the exhaust part, not the car body. Well that explains the rattling I've been hearing recently <blush>. Anyway, I happened to be parked very close to Halfords so I went in and got a very similar rubber exhaust fitting - it is very similar but very slightly bigger - the trouble is I can't see how to fit it. I mean, it's obvious that it slips over the bracket on the car and the bracket on the exhaust but one points forward and one back so I can't see how you can fit it without pushing the exhaust about 2 inches to one side which doesn't seem a good idea, even if I was strong enough to do that one-handed!

So my question is... do you guys know if this bracket is one that can only be replaced by removing a part of the exhaust or am I missing something ?

Cheers
