Hi, i was just wondering, ive got a 1997 1.2 60sx punto and im not sure if i put a big exhaust on and an induction kit if it will use loads more petrol?! and whats the biggest size alloys i could squeeze on it??

Thanks :D

On an Punto 60 I wouldn't go above 15-inch wheels as it'll accelarate like a snail with anything bigger. I think 17's can be made to fit but takes a bit of effort.
Induction kits actually improve your mpg by making the engine run more efficiently (so long as you don't thrash it everywhere :D) and an exhaust should have a similar effect. A loud exhaust might be a bugger on insurance though!

[}:)] oh my god Jonny boy, where did you hear all of that?

The Punto 60 accelerates like a snail already.
17"s fit with a little trimming to the insides of the bumpers.
Inductions kit don't increase MPG.
"Big" exhausts don't increase MPG.
A back box, no matter how loud, will not affect your premium.
A cat back "performance" exhaust will increase your premium but not by that much, depending on age and driving experience.

Where'd I hear all that? Umm...*scratches head*...here and there ;)

The induction and exhaust stuff is all basic engineering principles (see below!); as for insurance, "performance" exhausts make your car noisier and thus more attractive to thieves, and are an indication of "boy racer"-type drivers which insurance companies see as a higher risk. Hence if you tell them you have these mods, they increase your premium; if you don't and you have to claim, they'll refuse to pay out :O

Induction kits are less restrictive to airflow than a standard airbox and filter, so the engine doesn't waste as much power (and therefore petrol) in sucking air into the cylinders. In normal driving, a car with an induction kit needs a slightly smaller throttle opening than one without, thus consuming less fuel. Under full throttle, an induction kit allows more airflow into the cylinders, hence more fuel is injected and more energy is released.

A well-designed free-flowing exhaust should also improve your MPG under normal driving as it reduces the back-pressure in the exhaust system, and consequently less energy is wasted in pushing waste gas out of the cylinder.

Of course, if you fit these tuning bits then thrash it everywhere, of course you'll not gain any MPG! But if you're driving normally your car will run a little more economically :D

There ya go Evil buddy...if nothing else it's conclusive proof that I spent far too much time awake in Physics lessons [8D]

The key point there is the alteration to the throttle body. Without that the induction kit will burn more petrol because the increased airflow isn't *really* being properly used.

I think..

Jonny - your physics is spot on BUT, incresed air flow increases fueling therefore lower MPG.
A less restrictive exhaust allows more air through the engine, more air more fuel, lower MPG.

"exhausts make your car noisier and thus more attractive to thieves"
Thieves can't hear your car when its parked and you are away from it, they arn't likely to steal it while you are in it.
