Further to my previous post, my power steering has officially died

4 restarts and it didn't come back on. Got the AA out this morning, came back with a C1002 code. Battery checks out fine, charging all ok. He said I need a new battery as there are frequent "Start/stop not available messages"

Spoke to a chap in Halfords, he said it's definitely not the battery as you'd also have other problems like starting the car etc

At the moment the AA man took off the start/stop clip in the neg battery terminal, and touch wood it's been ok when I took it out to lunch, with the odd complaint about the s/s not working BUT power steering ok.

I'm completely lost as to what to do. I need my car for work, and as i'm under 25 there's nowhere that do a reasonably priced courtesy car!

HELP!:)

Thanks for your replies guys :)

Freebo, I haven't taken it to Fiat yet, but i've got a an appointment booked for Monday morning, they want £41.40 just to put it on the machine. The AA chap said that the alternator was charging the battery normally. He's disconnected all the start/stop jazz so the battery is being charged all the time and after a 40 mile drive home it's been okay.

It's strange that everything is pointing to an electrical problem yet everything is ok!

Most Easterly Panda's, I was originally going to get it serviced at Fiat Piccadilly in Wakefield, but had to cancel as you've got to be over 25 on their insurance policy! What's your local garage?

Just an update, cars drove fine for the past 2 trips to/back from work with the car constantly charging the battery.

Lunchtime today I clipped the s/s back onto the battery. No error messages, but when the car was at traffic lights, the longest the engine stayed off for was a mere 7 seconds before starting again. No aircon, wipers or heated screen, just my lights and radio on.

As my battery is 4 years old, i'm going to replace it. Went to halfords, was about £80 for a standard battery + £7 for fitting. Just before I bought it, I told them it had start/stop and apparently it will now cost £24.99 for the fitting and a different type of battery is required. Are they taking the p*ss for the fitting or is there something that needs to be done? Im thinking this, albeit a mini but....

I'm thinking of collecting one of these tomorrow and fitting myself....anything I should be aware of?

YOU MUST FIT A ECM BATTERY! a normal battery will not last long at all due to the charge cycles of a start stop modified alternator on the car

it must also be bench charged then left to stand for a minimum of one hour before been fitted to the car!

Or the start stop system will give you hell...

this is the standard physical size of the oem battery on the 1.4 evo..

however sometimes depending on build type you can get a bigger battery on the tray

i fitted this to mine

Taken to Fiat this morning, diagnosed as the Steering angle sensor. replacement would cost around £700 as it includes the column as well, however Fiat have agreed to contribute 50% of both the labour and part cost, so it's coming in at around the £350.

Guess I can't complain really, at least it's going to get sorted. They did mention that I have a split vacuum tube also. Is this something I could do? They'd quoted around £50 for it, but i'd rather put that towards a new set of tyres which are needed

Has the battery been properly drop tested? A failing batter WILL lead to phantom errors which don't actually exist with the EPS unit.

They put it in the battery machine, which the manager emphasized frequently that it costed a fortune to get. I've got a print out but it's at home. When I get back, i'll show tell you what the numbers are :)
