Technical Everything lights on the dash and then it dies!

Todays problem is that all the noddy warning lights are on (locks, steering, battery, fuel etc etc ec) everything works as it should, engine - brakes - steering - indicators - lights - wipers etc but apart from the noddy lights nothing else on the dash works (fuel level, speedo, rev counter, fuel level, dash illumination etc)

Most weird.

Any ideas anybody. I think I shall try disconnecting the battery tomorrow, after that I shall be stuck.

Sorry but I can't find where to edit my post above (poss cos I'm on another PC).
There are 7 of the noddy lights on, lock,steering lock, warning triangle, battery,pre-heater, out of fuel, and h'brake. The speedo is stuck at 155mph (must have a word with the wife about that !).
This morning all appeared OK, the clock was flashing at 0:00, so I started to set the clock when the faults re-appeared. None of the other warning lights work (indicators, beam etc) but everything physically works.
The computer display either sticks at 'checking' or is blank.
Any assistance gratefully received.

you tried disconnecting the battery for a couple of minutes to reset the computer and ECU etc.

Tried disconnecting the battery. Still not right.
Even with the ignition off and the key out there is an occasional whirring noise behind the instrument panel and the dials have a bit of a fit, the needles moving back slightly. The speedo needle is now stuck at the 6 o'clock position.

Any more ideas ......please

The threat of the dealer fixed the problem ............. for 2 days. Ho hum, took it in and the dealer says he is fairly sure its the instrument cluster. He checked out all possible bad earths, correct voltages etc. Only ever seen something like it before on a Punto and new instrument cluster fixed it.

At £512 fitted I would like him to be positive tho'.
As that is about a quarter of what the car cost me I think I will ring round a few scrappers first.
Apparently its a half hour job to change (for the dealer !)

my new speedo from fiat was 212 from the parts department, but fitted under warranty.

Dash replaced. Easy took about 45 mins. Requires sml allen key (not sure what size) and a philips type screwdriver.

Use allen key to remove the 3 screws holding the lower steering column cover and remove cover. Lift covering fabric to reveal the lower two screws of the instrument cluster (Philips) and remove.
Unscrew the top two allen screws of the instrument cluster and remove. Take off the 'eybrow' to make removal of the cluster easier. It's a bit of a pain to get it out and past the steering wheel but it does come out. Unplug the connector at the top rear of the cluster as soon as you see it.
Reassembly is the reverse. At one point I thought the steering wheel would have to come out, but not so.
Only problem is the mileage is flashing at 10500 miles, bit low for this 02 plate that had 91,000 on it ! Probably means another £60 odd for the dealer to sort out.
I'm well chuffed tho', saved £450.

Flashing mileage means new device not recognized by the ECU (in your case the new dash); you have to proxi-realign it...done by dealer on Examiner

Sorry to be 'nerdy' but its the body computer (not ecu) & will recognise it but proxy-alignment syncronizes the modules/nodes internal clocks.

Thanks for these tips chaps. The mileage is clocking up ok so the new dash has been 'accepted'. Just need to add a (ten) thousand or two and stop it flashing!

Presumably there is some 'computer memory' in the dash as the settings for boot lock etc were different to what I had set up before. Not a problem, just an observation.

I can't stop thinking about a car being written off at only 10,500 miles. Wot a waste.

Dash Board Cluster

Hi Every One

I need some expert advise again, the dash cluster in my wife’s 1.6 04 plate was playing Christmas tree light up the warning lamp game then crashed out showing nothing at all Speedo, revs, temp, fuel all dead .
Had it scanned and no fault codes, it seems the cluster has gone Pete tongue, have any member fitted second hand clusters or an address for re-con ones as the main dealer wants a fortune
Ps will the new unit need to be scanned in by Fiat as it’s only really a monitor receiving info?

I've just had mine replaced by dealer as it done the same cost over £300 but came out of warranty so was ok, did source a secondhand one just in case warranty company wouldn't stump up but they have.the secondhand one for £125 at http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Alfacity-and-FiatCity just email them they might still have it. not nice driving around without fuel gauge and not knowing how fast you are going.

Don't know but the new dash as only 95miles on it now because the old one was dead they couldn't get mileage off so i need to give them proof of mileage as they can only clock forward not back so i imagine the dash stores the mileage so what ever dash you buy the mileage would come off the dash, if its from a JTD then it would probably plug and play but I wouldn't be 100% sure. all I do know is that they have updated the software in the dash because the seatbelt warning light now gives a bleep bleep when I drive forward unless i put the belt on. and the indicaters bleep when indicating.

mileage is stored in ECU/body computer so can get it from that to put in new cluster,also its a 'node' so needs proxy-aligned.

Mine dropped dead just like the discription above. You dont need a new cluster, its just a bad connection. I just fixed mine myself
