It going to be Panda weekend….
Had new tyres? Did a 20 journey to fill up and errands. Light came on but on restart extinguished. Message hill hold unavailable. Then came on next time. Done 260mile round trip, average speed 50+ mostly motorway cruise, newish battery.
Guessing check wheel fitting got knock/ disturb ABS sensors?
I will check pads/ callipers/ slider pins etc obviously, but braking well and true.
Anything else worth looking for?

I have MES, but it doesn’t give root cause just another line of enquiry.

Yes like any scan tool it gives diagnostic clues. Better off starting with clues than going in blind.

Your vehicle is strange in giving esc warning light without abs warning light. If a faulty sensor or wiring it normally causes abs and esc warning lights.

Worth using mes and reading wheel speeds to look if one wheel speed different to others this could well cause symptoms you have

Fault could also be with combined abs/esc pump -mes should give a code if this the case

The only vehicle I owned with ESC was a Skoda Scout 4x4 and the ESC sensor was connected to the antiroll bar and then fed information back to the ABS Module. As I understand it Fiat uses a different system which can also be a source worth testing.
I read somewhere that a brake pedal sensor failure can also bring up the warning light and as you @jackwhoo mention a full version of MES would give you access to "Live Data" such as the ABS sensor readings from the wheels to possible eliminate them or not and may also provide further data without simply pulling everything apart and spending unnecessarily.

Seem to have resolved this. Seems whilst this system is electronic, it can be could “wound up” in the same way that you can on a mechanical, on for example a LR Defender/Disco. So reversed on full lock , then forward on the other, rinse and repeat. Assume there must be a register/ counter in the software. On new shoes it failed to equal the counts.

I shall hook up the multiecuscan and do a live check and check pedal sensor, but for now extinguished. Will check the rear diff oil level also.

Electronic stability control
On some other makes the steering angle sensor sometimes has to be reset by driving a short distance on full lock either direction, often after battery disconnection.

Esc and differential lock are unrelated , only if has centre diff and it was driven locked could drive shaft wind up be caused.

Interesting whatever caused it.

Glad you have got light to go out.

Maybe coincidental. Check and clean ABS senso

I would double check how newish. Time flies. Check the resting voltage in the morning. So many hill holder issues are indeed the battery. Have you charged it and tried it? Easy first job. Silly abs faults often reset after turning off.
Bad battery gives a fault.
Driving makes it settle but light stays on .......till you restart.
