Heres the story

I have a 2000 (X Reg) Mk2 Punto HGT

Went out this morning & my steering warning light came on, But after starting a few times the steering was fine

Got The Car Home & had close to half a tank of fuel, The car stalled but i think this was my fault lol, but after starting the car the petrol gauge went from being nearly half to quarter of a tank, After turning the engine on again after being parked it then went to half very odd.

NOW, I went to pick up my nephew about 8 miles away from me,
got nearly home, was doing 80mph down the bypass then slowed down for the corner, put it into second to go round & the car just died ( had to be on a busy road too )

Got the car to a safe place & had a look over could see anything that stood out at such,
the car turns over but doesnt seem to be firing

(The temp of the car was about 1/4)

I have left the car for a couple of hours to cool down & incase of flooding but still wouldnt start.

Could anyone help me out with this.

Please & Thank You

Just spoke to my mate, & says it cant be that as theres still compression,
going to get thecode reader on it tomorrow hopefully that will give me a better clue on whats wrong,
Will also check for any loose earth wires too.

With this being the cause of the problem would the engine start when its cold but not start when it get warm?????

or would it not start completely until replaced?

usually what happens is when Cold the contact are just strong enough to allow the engine to start and run

When it gets hot - metals and plastic expand, bummer i know

As a result that weak connection inside the pulls apart and the ecu goes
HELLO - FRANK?!
WHERE THE HELL DID YOU GO!!

HEY FRANK!!

FRANK!!

thats right - your ecu calls the crank sensor frank
Wait till he' meets freddie tho - they'll get on like a house on fire

The fault code should prove fruitful for you :)

Ziggy

Thats a great way of saying that, love it, :)
Hopefully the code reader will give me the answers that i need,
Cheers.

Typically, if Crank Sensor has gone, there will be no spark and no fuel past the injector(s) -- the TDC sensor is the one that tells the ECU that the engine is turning over, aqnd if the engine isn't turning over, the ECU knows not to bother firing the plugs or injector(s).

So, easy to check.

Sometimes they'll fail intermittently and joggling the lead can bring the engine to life while being cranked. This cures nothing, but is useful for diagnostics.

But I suspect an issue with either the -ive battery terminal or one of the main earth leads in the engine bay.

Ooops -- often testers won't pick up a failed TDC sensor, so eliminate it first. If there's fuel past the injectors or a spark, the TDC sensor is probably in good health.

Am i right to think the the crank sensor is at the back of the block, so if im laying under the car its on the lefthand side???

Fuel gauges are kind of voltmeters. I would clean up the battery connections and the earth strap that goes to the top of the gearbox and always gets forgotten when clutches are changed.

I have cleaned up the battery, changed the battery, cleaned up the connectors on the whole cable from the battery to the gearbox,

still no joy, :(

When i start the car (this was with a fully charged battery) the dash lights flicker, the steering warning light & abs light up, also the fuel gauge drops then goes back to normal,

Got a new Crank Position Sensor, thats going to be fitted in a hour or two, so hopefully that the cause,

But any other advice in the mean time would be very much greatful. ;)

Also cant find anything in the guide section
