Hello all. Just a super quick question as the search function didn't give clear answers. I'm now in the process of fitting a new timing belt and now I'm supposed to turn the engine by hand to make sure the timing marks line up still.

In what direction should I turn the engine (i.e. what direction should I turn the crankshaft sprocket)?. I'm guessing clockwise but just want to make sure.

The car is a 1988 panda 4x4 999cc.

Hi Albert

yes clockwise when you look at the pulley from under the UK drivers side wheel arch. this engine may be a "safe" engine, but i guess you are turning it clockwise to meet the timing marks before removing the belt or you have just put the belt on and want to make sure all pulleys line up correctly.

Great thank you. No actually the belt snapped while I was out driving the other day so I have to redo the timing from scratch unfortunately.
 
Now I have everything put togetherand took it for a testdrive. The engine started fine and runs very nice on idle. However, when I take off I think the responsiveness is a bit sluggish and sounds a bit "airy" for lack of a better word. Could I be off by one tooth maybe?

I did notice when lining the marks up, that when the flywheel notch was in perfect position the crankshaft sprocket mark wasn't perfectly pointed at the edge it's supposed to point at, how is this possible since they both are connected to the crankshaft. Which side should I look at, flywheel or sprocket?
 
Hi Albert

I would ignore the flywheel and only concentrate on the crankshaft pulley and the camshaft pulley. but while fitting the belt make sure it is fully tight on the non tensioner side,

Ok ********, I priorotised the wrong way then,I lined up the flywheel perfectly. I did think to myself that the crankshaft mark was a bit low, but I'm not 100% possitive exactly where to point the mark, very difuse markings if you ask me.
