Technical Engine revving

Hello I've a fiat Ducato 2.8jtd on tick over the engine intermittently starts to rev from 800rpm to 1500rpm then goes back down again. If I rev it when it's reving it goes above 1500rpm. The temperature gauge is on normal when the engine is hot. As anyone experienced this problem and may have solved it.

Does the van run ok otherwise or does it rev up itself when pulling away mine did the same when idling and when pulling away it would hunt wanting to rev high it was the ecu that was at fault in my 2009 2.3 ?

Unplug the maf see if it fixes it

Hello it revs normal through the other gears it's just when the engine is on tick over in first gear. Thank you for your reply.

Maf (mass airflow meter ) between the air filter and the engine

Tickover in first gear? Do you mean neutral or are you trying to coast in traffic or something? Your not going to coast in a manual vehicle with that much inertia.
