Just want to get some idea of what i can do really...

Im planning on rebuilding my engine next year, and was just wondering, what sort of things i could do to give it more power.

any hint/tips on cleaning part, restoring parts?

and mines a 1.6, what parts could i use out of a 1.8 to make it a little better...(im only asking because a friend has done his 2.0 focus and used parts from a focus RS to give it more power) but i dont know if mine would be able to handle it?

ps and dont say its not worth it lol....

this is only for ideas and tips..

Thanks!

the rs is a duratech so he must have just used the inlet as the are chain driven where as the zetecs arent he should have used bits from the rs2000 or from the galaxy 2.3 as they are the same but cheaper lol, just recon it and i bet you get a bit more power back.

hi comp pistons
steel rods and crank
there is loads mate decide how much you want to spend
buy a second engine too so you still have the car to run in

The Ford engines are based on a common platform, unlike Fiats. There is nothing you can use from other engines in the range. The 1.8 Bravo engine is a totally different engine.

Given the lack of replacement parts I would basically say 'don't bother'. Seriously. I'm not just saying it to be a grumpy old git. When my 1.6 wears out its going in the bin. Not worth taking it to bits.

If it needs a rebore you'd have to source oversize pistons (and I have not seen them available) or sleave the block at much ££. If the crank is worn then its a bin job, they are nitrided and can't be reground.

Steel rods and forged pistons, utterly pointless unless you are going to make it into a 9000+RPM monster with custom inlet, exhaust, ECU, cams, final drive ratio etc..

Unless you actually have a problem with the engine, knocking, smoking, low oil pressure, then I'd leave it alone.

If you're wanting to do this because you've got nothing else to do then new oil pump, new bearing shells, new oil seals etc.. but other than that there not much else to do.

try bike carbs a mate has them on his corsa gsi and that thing flies proper and sounds mint, look for gsxr or most 600 bikes

well the engine is starting to reach the peak now..so i want to strip it out and rebuild it, just to say iv done it and well to learn more as many young lads want to.

but im not up for spending big money on fast road cams and performance pistons, just want to do some DIY stuff to make it perform better. im not up for doing the performance much, just small simple things will do, im more into my looks than speed...rather drive slow and stylish than quick and dead :)

get a dremmil and match all ure ports, that costs asmuch as the bits to do it lol the carbs can be got for just over a ton get better spark plugs all that helps

Check the bores, check the crank, new oil pump, new seals, new shells, thats about it.

Ignore people recommending bike carbs, steel rods etc ;)

just a good clean and restoring all the rubbers and plastic, filters etc good in and out will restore it will it?

Not totally as the bores and rings will be worn.

You can't just fit new rings as the old ones will have been worn to fit the profile of the worn bores. If you fit new rings to old bores they usually break.

Before you strip it do a leakdown test.

go find a newer 1.6 multipla engine and fit it to the bravo. its the same engine but with slightly different electronics.

its cheeper to replace than rebuild these days. i would only bother rebuilding either a properly developed engine or a very rare one thats it.

you dont learn about engine internals by dumping a new one in though do you?

no you learn about it throuh years of experience and working with somebody that does know what they are doing! guy croft writes some nice publications that will help you along the route of fiat/lancia/alfa

it is a well known if you want to learn how to build engines you start on something very simple like a mini/beetle and work up!

Yup, learn with an engine thats a) very common b) has LOTS of CHEAP and PROVEN aftermarket parts and c) has a LOT of literature available about it.

ie BL A-series, Ford crossflow, Rover V8, Fiat/Lancia twin cam, Alfa boxer etc..

i wont be doing it alone, ill be doing it with my dad, who has got many years experience with motors, he has rebuilt many engines in his life and he has built a few from scratch. i just want to take the knowledge now :)

that multipla or whatever engine, different electronics?? what does that mean, i need to change some wiring??

Hey Shaun how do you mean its reached its peak, what`s the mileage on the engine, it won`t be the same as the what the car has done i`m guessin

and if you are thinkin of replacin, why don`t you get a 1.8 engine, thing is tho you might have to replace some of the exhaust system too

Bravo, why settle for less

ZZ TOP RULE!

well the engine it self has done over 130000, it drives pretty good but it has some weird habits, such as my other post where it doesnt pull right and wont set off right, but then the next day itll be perfect lol...

and i dont really fancy doing another engine swap lol im happy with a 1.6 it has enough power for me so id rather keep it lol, its just for me to mess around with but still keep enough power to show little saxo's up ;)

im gonna wait a bit with the 1.8 im hoping to get one but itll have to be in the far future lol

you dont want to do an engine swop but you are willing to rebuild it which is 10X the work. think about what your saying!

drive it until it dies save your money then buy another car!

i know its 10x the work lol iv already done 1 engine swap on it lol i just really want to learn about it thats why i want to rebuild it even if i get a new engine, ill strip it and rebuild it.
