We have a 2013 Fiat Ducato based motorhome with the 150 Multijet engine.

We are currently away touring Spain, and a warning light has popped up on the dashboard advising us that the engine oil has deteriorated.

The vehicle has done 28,280 miles and had both the engine oil and filter replaced at 25,000 miles. The oil is changed every 5,000 miles, and it has been since new using Shell Helix Ultra Diesel 5w40 oil each time.

As you can appreciate, with the vehicle having done only 3,820 miles since the last service we are a little concerned this may be an indication of a bigger problem.

Has anyone had this problem themselves?

Luckily we carry engine oil and a filter with us, so we hope to change both in the next few days. Should we do this ourselves or try and find a Fiat garage so the oil can be checked?

If we end up swapping the oil and filer ourselves, is there a procedure that can be followed to reset the warning light?

Thanks in advance

Assuming you have a dpf it is quite likely that the dpf degradation counter was not reset at one or all of your last oil changes. It is separated from the normal service reset in the Ecu. It would be worth finding a garage who has a Fiat appropriate service tool and ask specifically for them to check the dpf oil degradation value and the last regen data. They can reset it. Don't bother changing the oil. You could probably wait till you get home but at some point it will decide not to regen if it needs to, not ideal, ok to get you to a garage you like though.
