Engine Noise ???

Jumped in my HLX last night, and as i pulled off my drive noticed that my car seemed to be holding back, then it would have a few spurts of power then die off again!

All this time i can feel vibration from the pedals? I slowed down and wound down the windows and i could hear a strange winding, whistling nopise coming from the engine.

I stopped and lifted up the bonnet and the noise seemed to be coming from the one side of the engine (the side were the cam belt is!)

Does anyone have any idea's what it could be? or any advise would be most appreciated!!

Did you stop the engine and see how much flex there was in the timing belt?
How many miles has it done? How old is the car? Size engine?

engine noise ???

sounds like the cam belt tensioner is ka'put and maybe the belt is slack or as slipped a notch. had similar prob wit my hgt where it slipped that much it would'nt restart after stopping. only just avoided needing a new engine.
get a garage to look straight away or could cost you big time. cheers

Re: engine noise ???

Go straight to garage, do not pass go, do not collect £200.

Re: engine noise ???

It's a, 1.8 HLX 1999 just done 62,000 miles.

I haven't moved it off my drive since it's happened, i know a mechanic who will come round this evening to take a look!

Any ideas on how much this may cost?

Re: engine noise ???

if it IS the tensioner then you are looking at a proper full cambelt change. dont let the garage re-use the old belt. unless you had it done recently its definitely due.

dont drive the car till its done.
