Technical Engine Fault

Hi Fiatforum
I m getting this message displayed and i cant see any issues with my car. i read few threads relating to this issue, in which they had problem with rev, misfiring, car judders whilst driving above 70mph etc etc.. i drove above 70 mph to see anything goes wrong and nothing happened. I have also disconnected battery terminals for half an hour... still that message appears. Should I buy leads for fiatECUscan? will that resolve this issue? Cars MOT is due soon, will they fail MOT if this message appears?

it could be a whole host of faults... if you get no change to the drivability of the car it could be a lambda issue.

FES and the leads will be invaluable thoughout your ownership, nearly everyone on here who owns them says the same so get your self a set then you can atleast give us the DTC

Yes, it is an MOT failure. What you need to do is get the code read, since there are a lot of reasons that might give you an 'engine fault' message. I got one from an accelerator pedal error...

You can get a garage to read the code or you can buy the FES and do it yourself, If you plan on keeping the car for a long time or having fiat or alfa cars the FES is a good investment.

My car is Fiat Stilo 1.2 3dr active ... What does DTC stand for? I am getting a new FES but can you guys give us some advice on where to get it from please? I saw a link from which u can download free FES software but what types of leads will be appropriate.

DTC = Diagnostic Trouble Code

apparently these work! i dont have one of these i have different patch cables but other members do use this 'switched' interface cable

with the engine light on you will be looking for 'P####' as a fault code, see my sig and theres an excel document of all the one i know about!

regarding the FES I've yet to get one myself so can't say, but there are other threads on this subject on the forum, just do a quick search and you will find that you need.

theres been numerous threads on it all over the forum but i have never known a MIL to fail a car on MOT. its an indicator that something in the engine is wrong but intermittent codes can still throw the light. as long as there are no red lights on the dash then a tester cannot fail a vehicle solely on the presence of a MIL. if the vehicle subsiquently fails on emissions then expect to see Lambda or timing related DTCs... the tester will have failed the car on the emissions not the MIL it just so happens that the ecus are doing their job and making you aware there is a problem
