Hello All

Today my Fiat Stilo 1.6 Dynamic started feeling very odd while I was sat at the lights. It started off with misfiring which got worse when I tried to move off. Next the yellow sign (shaped like an engine, I think) flashed up on the dash and an engine fault was reported with a spanner. I was able to drive the car home but its misfiring on acceleration, the yellow 'engine' sign is staying on constant (not flashing) and the engine fault with the spanner is being reported.

Has anyone seen this before? I'm desperate. I've only had the Stilo of less than a month and already I've had to sort out the airbag issue, central locking, got the wheel alignment done, have to replace a faulty factory fitted cd player and now this.

Please help. thanks

thanks T14086. Would it still be a coil issue if its a petrol?

thanks 850kd. Does replacing the coil/s remove the yellow Engine sign and the Engine fault message

The engine light will most likely disappear after som starts. It might be memorized for a while.

You don't have to get the car diagnosed or buy 4 coils. You need to buy 2 as one will be replaced and one will go as spare in the glove compartment. :) If you have a little spanner set in there aswell (at least no.10) you can change a coil on the road within 5 minutes.

Let the engine idle, and unplug one pluglead - these are low voltage and will do no harm. If nothing happened, this coil has the fault. (y)

Ha! Wakes you up a bit doesn't it.

The electrical connector to the coil is low voltage, that's what the coil does, converts it to very high voltage, but "the business end" actually on on the plug is much higher voltage than the older ignition set ups so you don't mess with that end

For real class you can "sniff out" the bad coil as it smells of burnt bakelite. Impress your friends and put a bet on which one just by using your nose:)

Guys, I've followed the coil repair guide. Found the faulty coil and replaced it ;-)
Car sounds/drives perfect. Only promplem is that the Engine fault and the yellow engine sign on the dash remains. I've restarted the car about 10 times but no joy. Is there anyway of reseting this message. Thanks
