Technical Engine fault light - help :)

ive only had it for 9 months, does my nut in! its had 2 previous owners, first a guy who got the first service done then a woman who used it for the short in the town work run every day.... she had it the longest by the looks of it, 3 or 4 years.

digital metter :(

but, dads being dads and all, its fixed, touch wood....

battery disconnected and left for 30 mins.
reconnected, key turned to center to allow the system check. battery and oil light on, engine light off, no fault reported.

stuck about another 2L of oil in it, maybe just a but less.

key out, then back in and to the centre with accelerator down then released, to get the throttle/butterfly flap thing in the right positon.

key out, then back in, to the centre, then start.

car rough, running at about 1100 revs on idle but no warning light and no engine management warnings. my usual taping sound loud. dad things hydrolic tapper or something, what ever that is.

left for 20 mins, after that the revs had returned to normal, and the tapping was very quiet, only just able to hear it above the idle engine noise.

If this was cause just by low oil and a dud battery in combi, im gona look really really really really much more dummer than i already do... :)

Considering, how it sounds like it's been treated then I reckon you should :worship: the car.

Get an oil & filter change as a priority and also treat the car to a new battery (DON'T fit a cheap one). Make sure they use a top quality fully synthetic oil such as 5W-40 (as suggested by Ffoxy) as this will tend to clean the engine.

Get advice from a specialist Fiat garage (lot cheaper than main dealers) about the came belt situation, and general condition of engine, as it most likely needs changing urgently. Before any garage starts work tell them you want the service indicator reset when they've finished (and included in the job). If they say they can't then goto another garage straight away as any genuine Fiat garage should be able to do that easily.

yup, theres a thread on here i was looking at somewhere on batteries, thats the first purchase.

iv got it booked into the only fiat garage near me on the 8th, will get them to give it a full going over

That's a fantastic battery (almost overkill dare I say ;)) which only this year I fitted to my JTD before taking a trip down to the Alps.

The fuse board fits perfectly to the new battery as long as you take care to keep the original fitting pegs (y)

Pretty sure an 096 fits all Stilo's but someone might like to confirm :chin:

hehe its the one you recommended in another post, i cant take the credit :)

just tried the car there, been sat for about 2 hours. first 3 times i tried to start the engine coughed once then cut out. the dash etc did not reset.

took the key out, back in, turned to center, waited for checks to complete then tried to start again. started fine, nice and quick but i got a "high coolant temperature" message right away. this went almost as soon as it had come up though. what would that mean?

i let it run for a few mins then turned it off. started it up again, again waiting for checks to complete before fully turning the key. started fine, no warnings or errors. left it running for 20 mins. repeated it again and it again started fine.

id say, my battery is !" and its messing up the electrics as its so low?

is halfords likely to sell a decent battery?

Yes... Stilo battery trays are all the same size and 096 is what I have in my Stilo.

There may be a small piece of plastic clipped into the bottom of the battery tray designed to stop the smaller, standard battery form sliding about. If it's there, you need to remove it to fit the 096.

Dave.

In all honesty, that is a bit of overkill for a 1.6

Just pickup an 096 with 3 year warranty (shouldn't need to spend much more than £60 or so) as I'd never trust a battery with only 2 years

Good deals on eBay too if you don't mind the wait

EDIT Dave beat me too it :)

Yup, many thanks for the help folks. Im going to a local place, should be able to get a 096 battery for £50-£60.

It takes 2 or 3 goes to get it running but once it is its ok, apart from the noises obviously.

update :)

Got a new battery friday morning and this helped solve the one problem, getting the thing to start right and engine fault. £58 for an 096 74ah from a local tire place.

unfortunately engine warning came back on Sunday, that cost me £60.67 for a new coil, 4th cylinder had gone. now thats replaced the engine is running smooth.. ish..... in my desperation to get the thing running, i put too much oil in :) about a half inch above the max line.... now i have blue smoke when starting up and it takes ages to go away and if i accelerate hard i get puffs of the stuff coming out and the engine kinda chokes on it a bit when first starting up and idle when cold, very embarrassing... ooops :)

That's sounds seriously overfilled :(

You need to resolve that fairly quickly as it can cause engine damage.

that may be more practical as i dont have a good space to jack it up and get under it enough to get at the sump. its parked on a hill outside the house :)
