Panda (Classic) Engelbert the H reg Dark Green Sisley Progress Log

Introduction

https://www.fiatforum.com/panda-cla...ng-h-reg-sisley-needs-home-5.html#post3514984

So today I took delivery of the above mentioned Sisley, who I have decided to name Engelbert after the last 3 letters of his numberplate (I always name my cars in this way). All is explained as to how he came to be in my possession from the above thread so I wont touch on that too much here but will say the seller is a very kind lady. She was understanding about the transport frustrations I had and was very honest about the condition of the car.

This first post is going to be very pic heavy by the way!! I got it and did a quick assessment (I will do a more in depth assessment tomorrow) but I am extremely pleased with the condition generally, it obviously will need work but I am prepared for this (hence the project log). It has every sisley extra apart from the grille badge and is missing two centrecaps and the horn push (I am not counting the compass in this), though I wasnt expecting there to be as much of the sisley trim etc as there is! I am in the process of compiling a list of required items too.

Required Items/work required

Side repeater indicator
Front part of Airbox assembly (or new clips)
two sisley centrecaps
Front grille sisley badge
Instrument surround (See photo)
possibly bonnet vent (there is a small crack in this but I actually dont think it matters too much)
Possibly new bonnet or just work to the bonnet
Rubber headlamp rear cover
Rubber boot seal
Refurbish wheels and new tyres
Sisley Horn Push
New Battery
Aerial
Wiring repairs (wiring next to battery at least)
Repair front seat fabric
Under bonnet screwdriver
wirebrushing and undersealing, possible welding at points
Front bullbars
rear bullbars Palio I havent forgotten about this, but will wait till funds are more available if thats cool?
Obviously a stripdown and recommissioning generally of the engine is required as it hasnt run in 4-5 years

The general condition is pretty good indeed, though some rust curing and prevention will obviously have to be done. But I gave it a quick clean and it has come up very nicely, I am struggling for things to say about it as I have so much swimming in my head at the moment with it, im overwhelmed, need to sleep to digest it all! I will let the pictures and videos do the talking (still need to upload videos)
If I were a betting man, I'd go for the gearbox socket over the speedo. - Just because the metal looks softer.

If so then, I've got replacement bits and owe you a favour, so just shout.

"Thumbs Up"

(How things change. - Now I'm writing in text what an emoticon would express in symbolic shorthand, because the functionality that would save my typing time has broken. And to add to that waste of time I feel obliged to attempt an alternative explanation for it's failure.)

if it is the gearbox speedo drive im pretty sure one from off a cinquecento sporting will fit. (they use the same speedo cable)

they can be a pain to get out but doable. just watch your gearbox oil.. best to do it facing down hill.
if its the clocks.. hmm. well i have bexes old clocks and they are sisley. i can try to set the mileage to what yours is if you want?

How fast have you driven the car, if only slow speed it may not show on the speedo. Jack the front wheels up and run it in gear if you are not able to drive it above 10mph.

Its funny you should say that, I had a message from the previous owner today. She just remembered that it seems to wake up at higher speeds (on the motorway was the example she used) but not sure about recreating motorway speeds on axle stands to find out?

Wow thanks for the show of support guys, I will let you know by the end of the day, I am going to test today by running the cable on a drill to see if the clocks move, and then driving the car with the bonnet open to see if my wife can see the cable turning internally. That should let me know which end the fault is at?

Presuming it is the gearbox end I would love an explanation of how to fix if you could kindly oblige?

Right so done some testing, let me know thoughts guys?

I couldn't get my drill into the opening for the gearbox end of the cable, so I turned it with pliers, I wasn't expecting much reaction from the needle, but asked my wife to look for any reaction, she reported the needle wiggled slightly under turning. So that told me that (albeit I can't yet completely say the dial is fine for reasons I will explain now) the gearbox end must be the source of the problem. I then took it off at that end and reinstalled it trying to feel for the cable entering properly in case the problem had been my installation in the first place. I then cleared my driveway and tried to test it under more speed. (I have a longish driveway) in reverse on the first run the needle didn't register anything, on going forward at more speed however it went up to the shown speed in the photo... And then stayed there. I then took it in reverse again, at which point it reset to absolute zero, and going forward again produced the same results.

Any ideas before I do more testing with the car up on axle stands?

if your speedo ever does that annoying "waving" when you go at a set speed stick some "food lube chain spray" on it.. makes the needle run really smooth and its food grade! :D

The parade does that. the needle seems smooth on this one so far though, though does seem to get stuck. I will lubricate it and hopefully job should be a good one :)

Took the Sisley a run down to the bottom of the street and back, (I live on a closed road officer) and while I didn't get out of second gear the speedo seemed to react accordingly, also it doesn't work in reverse, but neither does the parade, didn't know that. So all in all I would say from testing that it is working. Happy days.

I was having trouble organising my thoughts about this, so I decided to put pen to paper and do a list of things still required, and costs, the list is in a rough order too. I feel a lot better about it now :)

Bear in mind this list only goes as far as what i think will be mandatory for MOT (or helpful for an MOT)

Took off the rear diff cover today, made a brown paper gasket and refitted as it was leaking from the bottom side before. I am leaving it overnight to cure, it's supposed to be instant but I reckon I did it too quickly before. Hopefully it will be oiltight tomorrow.

Diff is filled with oil and doesn't appear to be leaking with the new gasket in place, hopefully a success then.

5 items on the list left to go

Make sure rear axle air vent is clear from any dirt / gunk.

It is semi-sferical cap on the top of axle case - passenger side, cap should be free around the air vent nipple but still attached to it.

If it's solid, some pressure might build up internally damaging shaft seals or diff cover gasket.

Ok mate I will check it. Thanks :)

Today I changed the radiator, which in and of itself was extremely easy, what made it take me a relatively long time was that the three jubilee clips I needed to remove were so rusty it was unbelievable. But it managed :) I also inspected, and ultimately changed the thermostat for one my dad had given me (its great that he still has loads of old parts from when he had these cars new!) Because of buildup of deposits, and the fact that the old thermostat had been removed from inside the housing, I couldn't believe it when i saw it, prepare for the photos to be particularly disgusting by the way!

I have a water pump to fit too, but didn't get that done today, I expect to be able to do it quite quickly next weekend.

As always I will post the video update for those interested once I have finished uploading it.
