Panda (Classic) Engelbert the H reg Dark Green Sisley Progress Log

Introduction

https://www.fiatforum.com/panda-cla...ng-h-reg-sisley-needs-home-5.html#post3514984

So today I took delivery of the above mentioned Sisley, who I have decided to name Engelbert after the last 3 letters of his numberplate (I always name my cars in this way). All is explained as to how he came to be in my possession from the above thread so I wont touch on that too much here but will say the seller is a very kind lady. She was understanding about the transport frustrations I had and was very honest about the condition of the car.

This first post is going to be very pic heavy by the way!! I got it and did a quick assessment (I will do a more in depth assessment tomorrow) but I am extremely pleased with the condition generally, it obviously will need work but I am prepared for this (hence the project log). It has every sisley extra apart from the grille badge and is missing two centrecaps and the horn push (I am not counting the compass in this), though I wasnt expecting there to be as much of the sisley trim etc as there is! I am in the process of compiling a list of required items too.

Required Items/work required

Side repeater indicator
Front part of Airbox assembly (or new clips)
two sisley centrecaps
Front grille sisley badge
Instrument surround (See photo)
possibly bonnet vent (there is a small crack in this but I actually dont think it matters too much)
Possibly new bonnet or just work to the bonnet
Rubber headlamp rear cover
Rubber boot seal
Refurbish wheels and new tyres
Sisley Horn Push
New Battery
Aerial
Wiring repairs (wiring next to battery at least)
Repair front seat fabric
Under bonnet screwdriver
wirebrushing and undersealing, possible welding at points
Front bullbars
rear bullbars Palio I havent forgotten about this, but will wait till funds are more available if thats cool?
Obviously a stripdown and recommissioning generally of the engine is required as it hasnt run in 4-5 years

The general condition is pretty good indeed, though some rust curing and prevention will obviously have to be done. But I gave it a quick clean and it has come up very nicely, I am struggling for things to say about it as I have so much swimming in my head at the moment with it, im overwhelmed, need to sleep to digest it all! I will let the pictures and videos do the talking (still need to upload videos)
Got Engelbert up on two axle stands, a punto space saver and the spare from the parade. I am getting new tyres on Saturday so just taking the wheels themselves to have them fitted. Its a nice easy job to get out the way so pretty pleased.

I am going to get the wheels powdercoated or painted after the MOT, I know they look crap :ROFLMAO:

Got all the new tyres fitted, another job crossed off! Cool to have all tyres with the never-been-on-the-road markings on :)

Also undersealed the rear arches while I was there :)

Got one of the old gear linkage bushes out today, pressed a new one into the arm (with difficulty and removing the arm to do it, and my dad helping me :ROFLMAO:), and now having difficulty getting the bush back over the ball joint using grips or anything else I have, levers or otherwise. I have run out of time and energy for this weekend so I am going to attempt to press it in next weekend using a G clamp. I don't have one so will have to borrow one or buy one. The bush popped off really easily in the first place though, and there was loads of play in it. I couldn't shift the other bush and there doesn't seem to be much play in it, so I may not have to replace it.

I also added a washer to the setup below the gearstick as this was worn and had a lot of play, of anything I have possibly set it up too tight, but it can always be loosened, I will see how it feels after the arm has been put back on.

it will free up over time.. if you think it is tight, dont worry about it.

the ball joints can be hard to get in. i fill the socket up with silicone grease then press them in with some mould grips.. though with enough ape strength (as my brother calls my strength level) you can get them to pop in by hand.

i didn't use any copper grease on any of the rubber bushes, but the one you put the washer in, being nylon.. i smothered it in the stuff >_<

I think if I had more height I could have applied more pressure to it, that or a G Clamp

The g clamp method didn't work, the exhaust gets in the way, had another go using more height today, still no success, tried grease, soaking the arm with bush in in boiling water, metal grips too I will get it though.

Got the grille badge and bonnet insulation fitted though, starting to look more like a finished car at least, if not acting like one.

Removed the water pump today. It was corroded and gunged up as expected, so I will put the new one on next week once I have cleaned it up and made a brown paper gasket for it.

The tensioner was buggered too, breaking up etc and I am changing the timing belt too.

Interestingly the timing belt was one tooth out of sync, so it should run better when its done properly :)

As far as I'm aware you never get a gasket from Fiat as you just use instant gasket.

This wasn't a genuine part as far as I'm aware, it does seem to be good quality though. I got it from my dad (he had unos and tipos back in the day so he has some good spares) so It came with a black thin paper/card type gasket, I used instant gasket between the pump mating surface and the paper/card gasket, then instant gasket on the block mounting face and the other side of the paper gasket. Probably overkill but won't go wrong :) I did a similar thing with the diff cover gasket, although I made it myself from brown paper.

Hmm, I may have to do this on my new 4x4 when I get the chance. The gear lever is super sloppy and I can't get reverse easily. To put it in first you almost have to open the passenger door and for reverse you need to remove the drivers seat  :D where did you get the bushes?

They are on eBay buddy :) though there seem to be two types on eBay. The kind you need are black. The first set I ordered were white and too small.
