thats the same question i was going to ask.
as i can gather, cleaning the egr valve gives you better performance as in the power is there quicker and less black smoke when you put your foot down.

but im not 100% sure if in rite but everyone on here cleans them so it must be a essential thing to do.

Not strictly true... I had a new one fitted as have many others, IMO the best solution as cleaning is a bit hit & miss for the time & effort involved. Particularly with regard to the solenoid end of the EGR which also gets stuffed full of clag & often missed by the people who clean the EGR.

Seekpart24.com or Worldcarparts.co.uk about £140

JUst een to buy some carb cleaner ahead of the weekend.. noticed on teh can it says about spraying it into the air intake? Is there any benefit to say taking out the MAF and spraying it in there with the engine running, rather than removing the EGR, if my mpg is currently 47 and I have no performance issues?

i personally pulled the maf sensor out and sprayed it. i used quite abit uswell. i kept spraying until the liquid changed colour from black to clear.
i have read on here after cleaning it you need to spray contact cleaner on it, you can buy it from maplins or somewhere like that.
but i haven't and its ok i think.

Well, had a go last night, couldn't get the rear lower allen key bolt from the inlet loose - the upper one was already slightly chewed on the head, but came loose.... so I have to assume that it's been off sometime before I bought it.
I'm averaging mid to high 40s anyway, and have no performance, stuttering or smoking issues, so I'm assuming that the EGR must be pretty much OK.

I've just cleaned my egr valve out with much help from this thread and forum.

I blocked it off to check that it was the fault, then removed the unit. On taking it apart, I found mine was entirely caked in soot and the valve stuck open. There was literally no room for it to move because of the soot.

Half way through reassembly now, can't wait to test it out.

Ps. I used carb cleaner to remove everything I could
