nope just a strip and clean this time, might make up a swirl gasket sometime if i can be arsed. or i could even order one with my blade alloys centre cap from shop4parts.(y)

i've had my multi jtd since new, most mpg i usually get out of it is 45 lowest i've had while using it for work van carting all my carpentry tools round in it was 39, but it does get thrashed quiet hard.

i was surprised how much gunky ****e there was in the bit on the end of the engine that the egr is attached to not sure what it's called, it was all gungy and clogged inside. scooped most of what i could see out with the end of a bolt. would it be worth taking that part off and giving that a good clean inside?

The modified gasket has three small off set holes punched around the centre, the idea is to swirl the exhuast gases as they enter the egr valve scowering the internal body of the valve and reducing soot build up. (could actualy move the problem to the delivery pipework before the valve). Anyway, nice to know that the tecnico's are earning their salary!

Well got me oil changed today mobil 1 0w30 :p and all me filters including a k&n mechanic had fun with that weird clip. Also changed my pollen filter lots more air coming through now, old 1 was wrecked and poor quality. Mechanic said the air filter was stinkin, havent noticed much difference in sound from the k&n but it does sound like its sucking a bit more air in. Wont really know bout my mpg till i clean the egr and go for a long drive. Im hoping i can keep my average above 50 but i dont hang about so i dunno if its possible.

All i have to do now is clean my EGR so im hoping for some good weather. Where can i get this carb cleaner at a motor factors or can i use some wd40?

As for taking it apart just take the two bolts off the pipe on the right and dont lose the gasket. Then removed the bolts holding it to the engine manifold how many is there? I think theres a pipe attached to the bottom is this easy to get off?

Attempted the EGR today and fitting the new battery but the weather changed for the worst so had to leave the egr and just fitted the new battery. The big varta fitted in perfectly and the bolts where long enough to secure it too. Had to bend the negative clamp abit as it wasnt holding very well, nothing to do with the new battery though.

On first start up though i still got the usual faults which concerned me but they dissappeared a couple of minutes later. Maybe it was just stored cause battery disconnected but only time will tell.

1 of the allen key bolts on the right pipe on the egr is sheared so im gonna have to take it off from the other end and they seemed to loosen ok, might be able to get the sheared bolt off with pliers when i get it out.

Does the electrical connector on the left just pull off?

I dont have any carb cleaner are there any alternatives?

Well i cleaned my EGR today i found it a bit of a pain to be honest because that bolt was sheered off made it very difficult reconnecting the bottom pipe because i couldnt get both hands to it. I cleaned it as best i could but i couldnt get the bolt off the corrigated pipe as it was sheered and put on very tight. I used a can of compressed air to blow most of the gunk out tho.

It wasnt as dirty as i thought it would be i know the previous owner cleaned it at some stage i.e. the sheered bolt but dont know how long ago.

Hopefully i will see a little better mpg but im not looking forward to doing it next year lol. My mpg is about 42 which isnt that great for a jtd but i do lots of short journeys mainly. Im thinking of cleaning the map and maf sensors its the only thing i havent done yet is it easy and is it worth while?

Just thought id post an update my mpg has gone from an average of 42 to an average of around 48 so im quite pleased. I didnt think the EGR valve was that dirty but cleaning it has certainly made a difference.

Just a quick question - can you clean the egr in situ, ie undo the bolts at one end and blast it with some carb cleaner? I want to to my MAP sensor, so I assume it's easier to do if I take off the bit to the left of the EGR, in which case is that the way to get a quick clean?

Zero chance of properly cleaning an EGR in situ TBH....(n)

No... the deposits can be quite hard to poke out! I used a Chop-stick & a cable tie, took me about an hour, squirt, poke, brush rinse...

Then I found the 2 hidden side venturi that were clogged solid!

for some reason i cannot get mine off, i can get most of the bolts and scres offf but the rest are so tight. so i have to give up unless someone knows a easy way of doing it. plus it propa recks your hands doing it, well im my case it does.

Shadey did it on his Stilo & his hands are like shovels lol!

well i cannot get it off at all. can get all the bolts off easy but not the two allen key screws. i can get the top one off the right angle pipe but not the bottom, and it aint movin at all.

They are very tight; I used an Allen key that fits in a 10mm socket easier with the extra leverage.

OK... question..

I've cleaned MAF and MAP, and I now get low 40's round town, 50 on the motorway @ 70, and low 50's on a 'run' (a roads, slow motorway) - seems pretty much in line with published figures - so is there any point in removing and cleaning my EGR? Am I going to get better figures than 48 average?
