EGR cleaned. now i have power problems.

hi guys,

I've got an '06 gps 1.9 multijet.
Recently read the thread on cleaning the egr, and about a week later, started noticing the low down sluggishness of the car.

So armed with the walthrough guide and all the bits and pieces, i took the egr off and cleaned it. God, thats thing was full of crud! All went to plan, but no increase in power once i refitted it.

Went to see my mechanic, a local garage that does servicing etc, and he recommended a little drive to see if the ecu needed to adapt to the egr now being clean etc. He has done a few egr cleans on vauxhall and fiats, hence going to see him.

Well, now the car has very little power down low, and if the accelerator is pushed fully down, you get very little response. The car wont go above 3k rpm, and i've noticed it smoking now too, which it never did.

anybody got any ideas, or is this a 'take it to fiat job'?

thanks for the help.

Paul

Sounds like the turbo isnt spooling up to me, check all pipe connections etc, might be the variable vanes have seized up with the same coke rubbish you saw in the EGR in the turbo

thanks mate, just looking for my service book so i can ive fiat a ring, cos before the turbo was very audible, but now, not hearing it. and the smoke is kind of a worry with the loss of power.

Yep ask the dealer to look over it, does it use oil? If so how much?

In 43,000 miles I have only had to put in a litre between services.

nope, not using oil at all really. will have to check all the connections in the engine bay in the morning, but its just odd that its been since the egr was cleaned.

the amount of crud in there was about the same as ive seen in pics, but the manifold was bad, was surprised at how much crud there actually was. Saying that though, my mate has the 150bhp in his vectra and he's had to clean his at least twice, and his is an 07 plate.

Hi Lee,

yes it did mate, was a great help, cos i'm not mechanically minded lol

i was so frustrated when the car didnt just burst back into life once it was all back together again. then the top rpm of 3000 and the smoke put the sh*ts up me a bit.

ok, where would i be looking for the turbo?

the car is due a service now actually, the power loss that made me clean the EGR has come on over the last month or so that i noticed. Just wondering about the turbo, would it just go like that, as its odd to just stop beign so audible after cleanng the egr.

I cant see the turbo just 'going' to be honest. Turbo's can last up to 100k miles. The turbo is between the radiator and engine, covered be a silver casing. Maybe after the service the car will be alot better.

Personnally, I would take it to the dealer. Turbos are complicated pieces of kit, and not really something you want to be playing with.

Can you hear it whooshing? Does it still spool onto the turbo?

nope, no whooshing, and not going any further up the rev range than 3000. used to be able to hear the turbo big time before, but since the cleaning, and the power loss, then i cant really hear it. full throttle gives little power, but pulling off the throttle seems to bring a little more power through, but definately no turbo kicking in like before.

right, been out this morning to check the connections etc and everything is fine, all the connectons look in place. took it to my mechanic to look over and he said same, it just feels flat and that its prob gone into limp mode hence not going over 3k rpm. this morning i am hearing the turbo, just not as much as before, so would that be because of limp mode? if so, the turbo could be fine.
Mate also said that as I have taken the egr off and cleaned it, that fiat may refuse a warranty claim on it. any truth to this?

The connector to the plastic end of the egr, does that clip on firmly with yours, cos mine doesnt click and stay in place, i can easily pull it down.

The egr has been off the car before, as noticed a bolt had been marked when re-fitted to the car, so i dont know if it has been replaced under warranty prior to me having it.

Would it allow exhaust gasses to leak? Its pressure in the exhaust manifold that drives the turbo, if its losing pressure it will be losing boost, and that would trip the ECU into limp home mode.. I take it you have an engine management light showing on the dash?

Have you had it on a diagnostics machine?

yes mate, came back on this morning. Had it come on the day before i cleaned it, then the light went off. now back today.

just off the phone to the 2 local fiat dealers, and one can look at the car on thu, and the other march 4th, and then 2 days to order an EGR if thats what it is. When asked about price, they want 110+vat for a reconditioned unit, and 180+vat for new.

The engine management light would suggest there is a problem with the EGR valve. All you can really do is take it to the dealers and ask them to check it over. They may charge you though......

well, the car's booked in for diagnostic in fiat on monday morning, so will have to wait and see what that shows up. closest dealer to me gave a date for diagnostic of march 14th!

A reconditioned unit is £107+vat, and a new is approx 180+vat according to the dealer, and a 2 day wait on the part.
