I've got an annoying squeek from my passenger side front wheel that has been getting louder and louder.

Yesterday I noticed other knocking noises that have joined it, along with a ton of vibration through the steering wheel (so another rattle from my watch shaking away on my wrist! lol) and some god-awful sound when I'm on full steering lock. Something sounds seriously wrong :(

Any ideas what I need to check? I've jacked up the offending side and the wheel actually rocks a little bit on it's axis, so I'm guessing its a bearing, but the knocking noises make me think it's something else.

Please help!

Is the center nut tightend like it should be ?

drive shaft

This sounds like the cv joint. get underneath and see if there is any excessive movement on the drive shaft?

Re: Help! Car Trouble :-( Bearing/CV/Driveshaft/Bushes/Something?!?

the CV joint goes usualy when the rubber protection on the axel gains a hole, so ther should also be grease on the calliper or around the area behind the disc

Re: Help! Car Trouble :-( Bearing/CV/Driveshaft/Bushes/Something?!?

The gaitor on the CV seems to be intact, no visible damge, or grease leakage. Also I've tried to see if it feels like it's got any play in it and it seems to be solid. What exactly am I checking for? Just wobbling it to see if it moves?

The wheel only has about a mm or maybe less of play in it, just enough to notice it's wobbly (and make it knock), though the funny thing is the amount of play its got changes, as you turn it. Turn it 90 degrees and there's no play in it. It's the same when driving it round in a circle, it seems to get tighter then looser as it goes round.

Re: Help! Car Trouble :-( Bearing/CV/Driveshaft/Bushes/Something?!?

If its there in lets say left turning and not in the right turn its the bearing for sure. It has 2 rows of balls in it so one side is damaged.

When you turn you switch the weight from side to side, so when its on the good row of balls its OK, end when its on the side where the balls have hit the outer shell of the bearing (common fault) it has some space and starts to grind.

will probly be the lower ball joint on the wish bone. the 1.6 dont really kill cv joints

Re: Help! Car Trouble :-( Bearing/CV/Driveshaft/Bushes/Something?!?

@Ash - if it was the ball joint on the wishbone, he would have a massive tear on the outside or the inside of the tire. Bacause the tracking goes.

@Ben-is the tire OK, also is the other side tire OK ?

Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t

That would explain it...

I just checked the wheel bolts...

Since last Thursday I've been driving with all four bolts of the front N/S wheel only done up hand tight!

On Sunday at about 95 mph. Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t Sh*t

Doesn't bear thinking about.

Thing is, I would have said I was 100% sure I'd checked them. 100% Even had the girlfriend getting paranoid I might have forgotten to so I double checked them. But obviously not.

Thanks for the help anyway! That's scared me into not doing that ever again as long as I live!

thats was gonna be my suggestion.. are the wheel bolts done up??

Cos it sounds just like my car did....

the bolts didn't seat properly.. i'd done them up.. but when i went down the road they moved and were loose... 1st a squeeky noise.. then a knocking!

Ask Paul R about it... like me he was going through all the things it could be.. only to find out.. it was the wheel bolts!

Glad you found out the problem sooner rather than later! :)

Tommy K - Have you got the Bottle!!

I actually lost a wheel in the past! On a(ex-girlfriends) beetle I used to drive. A rear wheel actually came off, overtook me and bounced off down the road when I was going about 40mph on a country lane!!

Luckily the rear arch bent back and bolted back on, with only a tiny scratch and she was none the wiser!

Those are handles from Alfa 147. Best place to get them is your local scrappy :)
