what i wanna know is, what does an ecu do? and if i reset it, what does that do? sorry, i dont know much about the mechanics of a car.

thanx all

Its the computer that controlls the injectors and spark.

It learns your car over time and adjusts the fueling to suit. If you make a big change, induction kit, new exhaust (not just a 'sports' or 'performace' exhaust) etc.. then the settings it has learnt will be wrong.

You can either just leave it and it will eventually learn the engine again or you can reset it back to its factory default and force it to relearn alot quicker.

The prob is your MPG will hit the floor for the first couple of 100 miles after a reset.

Re: Re: ECU

Listen to Tom Mig, he knows what he's talking about .especially about the MPG, I have spent a fortune on Petrol since resetting mine but i think it's starting to settle out now.I threw a bottle of Wynnes Injection Cleaner in the tank as well to help her along ( Halfords £4.99 ). do it as soon as possible and have twice as much petrol money ready for the the first couple of hundred miles.

Mark.

Re: Re: Re: ECU

Take your car on a 30-40min motorway drive, that will sort it out. The ECU does not start adjusting itself until 10-20 mins into the drive.

Re: Re: Re: Re: ECU

ECUs in Fiat Cars & its management strategies are basically as follows (with lambda sensor):-

1. Management of the injection
2. Management of th ignition
3. Management of the engine idle control
4. Management of fuel vapour recirculation
5. control of detonation
6. management of the climate control system
7. self-adjustment of the system
8. management of the engine immobilizer function – Fiat Code
9. Management of fault diagnosis
10. Battery voltage, RPM, speed,temperature, & etc

ECU in 1.4 engne 12 valves,
- Bosch Monomotronic MA1.7.3 S.P.I. integrated injection/ignition system
Canceling the errors
- thru Fiat/lancia tester
- by disconnecting the battery

ECU in 1.6 engine 16Valves
- M.Marelli Weber I.A.W.-1AF.13 Integrated injection system
- I.A.W. 1AF.15 for manual gearbox
- I.A.W. 1AF.25 for auto gearbox

Canceling the errors
Pls bear in mind…disconnection the control unit from the system, even for along period, does not delete or reset the errors in this ECU, Canceling the errors thru…
- thru Fiat/lancia tester
- When the cause of the error no longer exists and the engine has been started 5 times (running for not less than 20 minutes). Leaving at least 2 minutes between one start-up and the next.

ECU in 1.8 engine 16 valves
- Hitachi Integrated injection system

Canceling the errors
- thru Fiat/lancia tester
- by disconnecting the battery for at least 60 secs
- P/s failure warning light comes on when there is at least one “permanent” fault in the memory. During starting, the light is On for 1 sec, Off for 0.1 sec & On again for 0.5 seconds and kept on/off permanently according to whether the permanent errors are present or not.

ECU in 2.0 engine 20 valves
- Bosch Motronic M2.10.4 M.P.I. Integrated injection/ignition system

Canceling the errors
- thru Fiat/lancia tester
- by disconnecting the battery

Hope these helps

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: ECU

The CODE immobiliser is a seperate unit. Its not part of the ECU.

1.6 ecu

hi, mine is a 1.6 does this mean that even if i disconnect the battery the ecu will not reset or have i just read it wrong?

Re: 1.6 ecu

It won't reset the error codes, it will reset the fuel/ignition maps.

Re: Re: 1.6 ecu

Something to add….for 1.6 ECU…management

FIAT CODE IGNITION LOCK FUNCTION MANAGEMENT

The system features an anti-theft function. This is implemented through a special FIAT CODE ECU able to dialogue with engine control unit (ECU), and electronic key with a specific sender unit designed for sending an identification code.

Once the key is turned to STOP, the FIAT CODE system de activates the engine control unit completely. When the key is turned to MAR, the following operations take place in sequence:
1. The engine control unit (whose memory contains a secret code) sends the FIAT CODE a request demanding a secret code be sent to de-activate the function lock
2. the FIAT CODE control unit responds by sending the secret code only after receiving a recognition code set by ignition key
3. recognition of the secret code allows the engine control unit lock to be de-activated and normal operation to proceed.

NOTE: when the FIAT CODE anti-theft system is present, DO NOT test the vehicle using another ECU. In this case, the FIAT CODE control unit would transfer the recognition code (unknown) to the test control unit, which would thus be rendered completely unserviceable on other vehicles.

SELF-ADAPTABILITY

This ECU features a self adaptive function able to memorize deviations between basic maps and corrections imposed by lambda probe that occur persistently during operation. Such deviations (due to system and engine component ageing) are saved permanently so that system operation can be adapted to gradual changes in engine and components with regard to original specifications. To delete the save corrections, use FIAT/Lancia tester. The corrections are NOT lost when the battery or ECU are disconnected.

The strategy is de-activated while the fuel vapour cut-off solenoid is open. If the ECU is replaced, it is advisable to leave the engine to idle for a few minutes to allow the ECU to save the corrections again. The corrections at speeds faster than idle level are saved during the normal driving conditions.

The ECU is also equipped with self-adaptive function which corrects the engine idle speed actuator during idle on the basis of changes due to butterfly valve case leaks or natural engine ageing. This specific correction LOST when the battery or the ECU is disconnected.

Cheers
