I know they can't be mapped, but are they ones that learn from how the engine is running if they're reset?

Well my 95 owner's handbook (p116) refers to 'retraining' the inj control unit for the Bosch SPI monojetronic on the 1108cm (156 C.046) engine only.
The Haynes manual 81-95 (section13-34) 7 states: "The ECU is 'self-learning'..." and gives details in 'speeding up' the learning process in para's 80-82.
Though I've changed the battery on mine and not noticed much difference,

Yes they are Craig. Need to do the reset procedure (which is mentioned on here somewhere).
