just been told that the ecu on my p reg brava 1600 is beyond repair quoted 500 plus for replacement told as it is key coded cannot use second hand one so thats goodbye brava unless anyone has any ideas jsut passed mot and has been running fine goddamn computers.

can u not just find someone who has a key and ecu maybe u could use the one of my 1.8

re ecu replacement

my garage said as they would have to use a new one not second hand due to the engine coding is this not right ..thanks for the reply

Get a ECU from a car of similar age but MUST be the same engine, i.e 1.6. Again if the car is a MK1 you must get an ECU from a MK1.
Along with a set of matching keys. Swap the transistor over in the new key with your old key and swap the duff ECU with the New ECU.

Should work.

Also there are places that can bypass the immobilisor fairly cheaply.

the problem started in a garage forecourt filled up with petrol and would not start again no spark and no fuel at plugs taken to the garage where diagnostics showing no problems so they sent of the ecu for testing and tell me its unreperable and can only be replaced with a new one which is basically going to cost more than the car is worth..will a swapped ecu with relevant key be recognised by the codes in the car? my garage were suggesting not...thanks for the ideas keep them coming if you have any more

Have you checked the fuel cutoff?

Its VERY VERY VERY unusual for them to 'just die'. I would get a second opinion.

You need the keys, and the ECU AND the CODE box from an identical engined car. Just ECU + keys = worthless.

Some of the ECUs can be unlocked so you'd just need a second hand ECU and nothing else.

yes unfortunately i have tried the fuel cut off no joy, no indication of a problem ie no lights on ,key code and all dash lights behaving as they should ,when i try to start its turning over but failing to fire not suprising with no fuel or spark being delivered.Tom do you mean a second hand ecu which can be unlocked can be programmed to my keys and code box and should therefore work

Keith- Try this simple test.

Normal operation should be turn key on, code light stays on for 1/2 sec then goes off.
Does code light for this 1/2 sec?
Yes = key/immo/ECU communicating ok:- look towards crankshaft sensor etc.

Wrap the key plastic head in tin foil, or cover with a fold of lead sheet.
Turn on the ignition does the the code light stay on?

Yes = the ECU is talking to the key and immo
No = the immo is not producing error signal, therefore not working, could be batt/ign feed to immo.

re

I agree with tom on this one, very dubious to just fail totally like that.

I would get a second opinion.

I always thought even Fiat dealer could get your ECU and Code box blanked as it were, meaning you lose the standard immobiliser, but better than paying out loads.

are you using a blue key? do you have a red key to try on it? or as above, try putting new battery in the blue key first?

so say if someone has lost there red key (me) and they find an ecu, immobilisor box, keys, ignition barrel, door locks etc for a car the same age with the same engine, i can just replace all these and the car will start up? and id have a red key.

Yeah it should come to life again if you have a working ECU, keys, and code box from a donor car of same age and engine spec.

Keith,

Your problem sounds a bit like the one I had on my motor, which was that the TDC/RPM sensor was duffed (as Benny suggested in an earlier post to this Thread).

I picked up one for 10 quid at a scrappie and that solved the problem (more or less, the one I got was a little duffed as well!).

I'd suggest changing this first to see if that solves the problem. If you are getting one from a scrappie, try to make sure its a complete one (with the block connector at the end). I only got half and had to solder 2 different ones together.

thanks for the replies and suggestions folks hope to try these over the weekend. It seems to me though that when my garage tell me i cant use a second hand ecu because of the coding they are wrong as i understand it would work provided i have matching keys and code box or can have it reprogrammed to my keys.If it was a sensor problem why would the ecu be damaged beyond repair. Its a mystery to me .Ill let you k know when i have solved this one way or another.Constructive suggestions appreciated...

Doubt its of any use but I do have a MK1 1.6 ECU sitting in my garage if you can do anything with it.

maybe interested in the egu you have .Do you have the matching keys and code box.Do you know what year it is .Mine is a mk1 p reg cheers

Keith- Someone is giving you the run-around here, if the diagnostics show no problem the ECU must be functioning to some extent. "They sent it away for testing"?, who to? it certainly wasn't fiat, they dont do that. So some invisible establishment of unknown capabilities is saying they dont know how to test it or repair it. I would get it out of that garages hands ASAP and DIY, If you can give me the No of the ECU I can probably test out and/or test immo, even re-code the one you have been offered for a few beers.
BUT FIRST:- when you turn on the ignition does the code light come on for 1/2 sec and then go off? YES or NO

call me sceptic if you like!.
