Hi all,

Having the dreaded earthing issues, I've changed the strap underneath the battery tray and still not having much luck.

I can start the car by negative battery terminal to heat shield via a jump lead so I'm still assuming it's the earth.

Any ideas please :)

Your new cable.. 🤔

Does it go to Chassis AND gearbox?

To rule out the cable... first make sure the parts where cable connects (the gearbix and chassis) are clean and the nuts holding it are tightened. Then, you can do a voltage measurement using a multimeter. First read the voltage on battery terminals, then move the (-) probe to chassis, then to gearbox and to starter motor body. If the readings are the same as on battery, the cable is ok. If not, you'll find along where the problem is.
As you've described the problem, I recommend to check the starter motor, it may be worn out. Also, it would help you to do a battery stored Ah reading, to know for sure how it stands. The "no dimming of lights" test is not 100% conclusive.

Thanks, I'll have another look tomorrow once it stops raining. I think the starter motor is ok because once I bypass the battery live, the car starts
