Anywhere on the geabox will do you. as you look below the side of the battery. There os an earth wire attached from there to bodywork near the slave cylinder so its a good area.
Thanks. I looked underneath and found a metal piece just behind the bumper - like an L-shaped platform with a hole in the middle. I tried that and after 3 minutes or so not even a flicker of life. Do you think it might have been ineffective, and so I should have another look now I've read your advice?
Anything metal on the engine will do. Normally there’s a lifting ring on the top.
Or any of the places under the bonnet where wires are bolted to the body as ‘earth’ or negative connections (there’s a few near the battery).
To be honest, modern batteries are better sealed and rarely vent large amounts of explosive gases - so if all else fails, just connect to the battery
