You can actually get signal scanners, some people use them to access European porn channels, but you also need a motorized dish that can change it's direction to pick up signals from different satellites, and they are rather expensive. Whether such kit could be adapted to view Sky channels without subscription, I don't know, but even if it could, it would take a lot of months viewing to break even with the initial outlay.
does any one know if freeview would still work in my area, even though on the website it says,

...we sell freeview boxes at work, the staff have to check postcodes and most are normally accepted, but freeview always say 'you may need to upgrade your ariel'

It's important you get a decent set top box rather than the absolute cheapest. I have a very small Haupaugge unit which was cheap at btshop.co.uk
