OK, I've had my Stilo since last September and still haven't received the V5 for it. Having spoken to the DVLA on several occasions, one of which they said they were going to send it, I spoke to them again to find that they don't have the car registered to any owner. So now I have to pay £19.00 to get a V5, but not only do I have to pay for their cock up, they also tell me I'm not allowed to drive my car, because I haven't been able to re-tax it without the V5. Now I have to wait another 5-6 weeks without tax before I receive the V5.

Great system they have there.

No, when you buy a car, there are two tear off bits at the bottom [on the old V5 anyway] - the red one is discarded IF not selling to a motor trader, the other is given to the new owner [i.e. you] to prove you NOW own the car, and car can be taxed with that. The large top bit is then sent by the old owner to the DVLA, with your new details on?!

So my question is - what happened to the little green slip at the bottom? Don't say you left it with the old owner?

Oops, the previous owner gave me the large blue section and kept the green slip and the red trade slip. I thought he had to send off the green part and I kept the blue part with his details until the new one came with my details on it.

That's the problem of having had company car's for most of my life, haven't done much buying and selling of cars.

Instructions are clearly printed on the back of the V5. New owner keeps green slip, existing owner sends V5 back (after signing it) with the new owner address details on. The instructions are even printed in bilingual is Wales to make sure you don't COCK IT UP!

if you have the blue part you can get a tax with it

Can you tax a car that is not in your name? The blue part will have the incorrect owner and address information on it, won't it? Although I doubt the guy at the postoffice will check that except the insurance certificate may raise an eyebrow...

Even if the name and address on the V5 is nothing like what's on the insurance certificate Dave?

lol sorry Tryfan Tamer - had the same thought at the same time :D

Great minds....

Well, I'm still driving the car, it's just annoying that I have the money to Tax it and want to get it Taxed, but can't. I guess it will be a whole lot more annoying if a Policeman notices and doesn't accpet my explanation, although I'm hoping they don't bother looking now the DVLA uses their computers to keep check of it, wishful thinking I know.

I still don't understand how the DVLA can have no recorded owner of the vehicle. The must have known the previous owner and I thought the previous owner remained responsible until they informed the DVLA of the new owner's details. I also thought the previous owner was responsible if they couldn't provide details of the new keeper. That said, he had all my details, he even had to send me some stuff after I had purchased the car, which I recieved no problem, so he definitely had my name and address.

Hold on, if you still have the large blue bit, can't you just fill all the correct details out on it, with your name and address, and date vehicle was transferred, and then send it off to DVLA yourself, as if the old owner had sent it?

Lol, it was meant to be a rhetorical question, but ho hum :)

Still doesn't get round tax issue, unless he took this completed 'old' V5 to a DVLA office - would they then be able to issue a tax disc, and forward on the form themselves for change of ownership?!
