Sometimes my wife's 500 won't engage into reverse. It will stay in 1 or neutral. Car is 5 years old but only done 7k. Seems odd. Any suggestions greatly appreciated

Try engaging first (drive) before trying to use reverse. This will free-up the gearbox internally allowing reverse to engage more easily.

The issue is that you have what amounts to a manual gearbox with servos to work the clutch and shift the gears. It has all the benefits of a manual but with added complexity and non of the benefits of a traditional automatic.

Unsurprisingly, people drive them like they used their old auto e.g. using the torque converter drag to hold it on hills and for crawling in traffic. But the Duologic has a normal friction clutch so this can cause rapid wear. Worn out after 7000 miles would be extreme but 1/2 the mileage of a manual clutch is not unusual.

It's also very important the servo oil is serviced correctly.

It is mainly when cold on short journey. The mileage was meant to 17k but still extremely low mileage. Thanks for the reply. Will try to put in drive first

Change ALL lubricants including servo hydraulic oil and the coolant.

Change the cam belt as it's time expired.

Take it for a long motorway drive of a few hundred miles and drive it hard to free up the engine. It will soon feel like a different car.

As Dave suggested, coolant & cam belt change would be a good idea if not already done. Not so sure about the actuator fluid though. Unless it leaks or the accumulator has failed it may be best to leave well alone.

Back to the symptoms, what does it actually do when you select reverse?
E.g.
it does nothing at all, or
It makes a clunk noise from the gearbox, but the display doesn't change, or
It beeps and does nothing else.... etc.

Having had a Stilo Abarth with the selespeed auto box I recall that the simple process of Opening and Closing the driver's doors 5 times would force a gearbox system reset.

Have no idea if the same or similar function is available on the Duel Logic box but I would be surprised if it were not.

Not suggesting such a "reset" would solve the problem but if available then certainly worth a try.
