Technical Ducato multijet 2016 engine noise when cold

Just joined the forum as some help kindly requested. Touring in Spain in Hymer 2016 Fiat Ducato powered motorhome with automatic transmission. Recently on cold start-ups, a whistle or whine comes from the engine space and stops when the vehicle has warmed up. It is a very audible sound and increases when the revs go up and decreases when idle.

Any ideas? Is it likely to be a serious problem that needs instant fixing? Everything works and there are no warning lights.

Hi a common thing on Iv found that causes your symptoms on 2017 engine is the auxiliary belt idler bearing causing whistle noise could be same noise on yours also found the backing plate behind flywheel sometimes rub on back of flywheel but that’s more of a metal noise

Thanks! This is really very helpful. It's a whistle/whine more than a metal noise.

I'm touring at the moment but once back in the UK I'll get the vehicle into Fiat.

Could just be your alternator producing maximum charge for a short time to replenish battery. Quite common on some vehicles. Turbos often whistle/whine audibly when oil is cold. Noise goes away as warms up. My Benz 270 diesel does it every morning.

The noise sounds like a turbo whistling getting a popular fault on the later model Euro 6 I’m quite sure this members prob will be the same Iv taken these bearings off they feel tight no play but some develop this whistle noise ,also heard that noise your talking about more of a tight belt hum on Ducato 2.3 which I would put down to alternator

Thanks again for the helpful comments. My 2016 Ducato on a Hymer motorhome still has an intermittent 'whine/whistle' Not all the time, but quite often, and it is very audible in the cab. Booked into my Fiat dealer in early May and I've suggested it may be the auxiliary belt idler bearing. But as the whistle is intermittent the technicians may not be able to hear it. I will try to record the whistle before the appointment but if not possible, I hope they can find out how to solve the problem.
Any further suggestions would be most helpful

Check the hoses between the turbo and intercooler and intercooler to engine for leaks, loose hose clips, hose pushing off. I had this on my Ducato TD10 it pushed partly off the plenum and made a whistling noise.

The problem is now solved and thanks to you all for the suggestions. Fiat have replaced the idler/tensioner and the 'whistle' has now disappeared.
