Hi Guys, I have read with interest the pages that refer to 5th gear modification that can be done on the 2.8 ducato jtd and I understand whats req'd. But when I rang my Fiat dealer to enquire about the parts they dont seem to of heard about the issue. I wonder if anyone out there has done the mod and have the part numbers of the cogs I need?:bang:

I have a Ducato 2.8 JTD with the 'long' 5th gear and I thought about changing it. I am pleased now that I did not.

My motorhome has a 5 tonne MAM (Burstner 747) and I much prefer to drop down to 4th gear below around 50 mph. I get better mpg on Dual Carriageways and Motorways when cruising at around 60 mph (just over 2,000 rpm), which is economical. As moodrater has stated, you will burn more diesel when running at higher revs.

Do not take your speedometer reading as Gospel. You will probably find that it reads about 10% higher than actual speed. To verify this, use a Satnav and compare the mph shown by the satnav to the speedo.

5th gear doesn't seem so high once you know this.

Interesting, thanks guys for your replys.I will take your advice and confirm my speed using my satnav. It might well be if it isn't broke dont fix it?:)

Try a £50.00 chip tuning box like the one from "The Italian Box" probably cheaper than a gearbox modification. Claimed better torque should mean that you don't have to change down so often.

Mine is chipped but not with anything cheap and mysterious off ebay.

I have a Tunit box fitted and it works well.

The best thing about Tunit is their excellent after sales service. I got the box with the van when I bought it secondhand, so I did not buy it from them. As it is an old one, when I rang them with a query, they offered to flash it over with the latest software, check it and post it back, all for £20 (including Courier delivery). That was a couple of years ago. It developed an occasional fault, again I sent it back and they found the unit to be OK. They asked me to send the electrical lead, which they found to have a dodgy pin in one of the plugs. Again, I only had to pay for postage, the work was FREE.

A company like that is rare these days!

Hi. :)

I bought the lower 5th gears from main fiat dealer in Canterbury £150 and spent a further £150 having them fitted. This has worked well over the last 7 years on our tag axle 5 ton M/Home. We use our van in france a lot on the normal roads this lets you run along at 45mph + very well. :)

Hi
I am part way through this modification and had a helluva job removing securing nut for the small gear. Is the nut an interference fit ?
Thanks
Roger
