My 05 2.3 jtd keeps stopping engine management light comes on then it stops turn ignition off then back on there fuel lifter pump starts making gurgling noises like it's pumping fuel it will now start can run with erratic tick over then it will only run for a minute or it can start with perfect tick over and can be then okay for weeks or it could stop 5 times in one day could any body please help me thanks Woody wood

could be air leaking in some where-that would cause lousy running and poor tickover

If you have recently replaced your fuel filter, I would guess that you may have a slight air leak, as mentioned by madwrx.

Definitely gurgling is not normal, fikter is under pressure though if filter was loose you would have fueo spewing outbof it. More likely a return hose is perrished

I thought it could be air leaking in to the system but why is it intermittent and it's been go ing on for years I thought may be some sensor could be the cause

if you suspect a sensor issue i would suggest obtaining a code reader or better still a unit that can give live running condition data-it,ll certainly point to a seriously duff sensor- better still find a "decent" diesel specialist to find it -any probs with fuelling often sends the fuel pressure through the floor-

i seriously could,nt leave a fault like that ,it would do my head in-as well being downright dangerous if it did it on a motorway slip road-

I've just been to a diesel specialist and had a crank sensor changed that was another problem and actually diagnosed correctly on fiat forum but I didn't read it in time and paid £210 to diesel specialist thought I would try and fix it myself this time it's only an old van I use for work newer goes on motorways thanks Woody wood

Sensor faults are a major pain the ring lol. Glad it’s sorted mate..... often have faults at work that are symptoms and downstream of the actual fault ,, just have to work it back till I find it

if changing the CAS sensor , brought back a different issue...

it's probably a wiring issue,
did you disturb much to change the CAS??
Hi varesecrazy you diagnosed the original fault cars but I didn't read forum ln time so a garage changed cas £210 lighter they wouldn't have to touch any wiring only the wire to cars and as say this fault has been going on for years engine management coming on vehicle runs out of fuel turn ignition off then back on lifter pump lifts fuel engine starts if erratic tick over will only run for a minute or so if starts and tick over smooth could then run for weeks months or could all happen tomorrow again also when vehicle stood overnight or even a few hours when you turn ignition on your can hear lifter pump pumping fuel for a couple of seconds I don't know if this is normal on a 06 2.3 jtd thanks for posting before about my cats you where spot on

Hi varesecrasy it definetely makes gurgling noises when restoring pressure it only happens for a few seconds when the engine stops fuel not being pumped you can turn igition on and off and it will make the same lifting pump noises every time you switch on and off if it doesn't eg remains pressurised it runs fine it does sound like an air leakage fault if so where should I start looking on low pressure side or high any ideas I can't see any fuel leaking by the way thanks Charlie

It's going to be something stupid like a blocked in tank filter attached to the lift pump or bad electrical connection on top of fuel tank casing or worn out pump kinked plastic fuel hose,,,,,,, if it runs with no fuel pressure problem s ( hi pressure side) in normal running ,the low pressure side needs going over woody.......huge nuisance finding " now and again faults"
Tank will need dropping to see any of this mate,,,,,,not easy to do at home but a piece of cake on a lift.
