Hi all,

I have a 290 2.3 Multijet , 2018.

Although having covered only 22,000 kilometres ( I live in France)
it has been diagnosed as needing a new high pressure fuel pump, €1200.

The Fiat dealer says it should also have 4 new injectors , €2200
and a new Accumulator, €1100, plus a new cambelt, which I believe has to be done anyway.

Along with various bits and pieces and VAT, I am looking at a bill of €6800.

My question is, do I need to change the injectors and Accumulator?

Thanks in advance

Craig

Hi Craig, Cambelt definitely if it has not been changed from new. Did they tell you why the other items need replacing? Is the vehicle not performing correctly? You could check some of the parameters by using Mutiecuscan software - just to be sure. You will be able to read the fuel pressure, accumulator pressure and bleed down time of it, and also measure the injector correction figures at idle.

It refused to start and had to be recovered, a local garage had it for 10 weeks and couldnt diagnose it,

hence the reason it is now with a Fiat Main Dealer;
I guess you are in their hands then and have to trust their guidance. I would be asking for the reasons they are suggesting those three components. Did you get any bad/dirty fuel perhaps, or even water in the fuel as it seems a bit early and low kilometres to be replacing the fuel pump as well as the injectors. - specially the pump. The accumulator - I assume you are referring to the hydraulic accumulator for the Comfortmatic gearbox?

You are right , I am in their hands. They say "in their experience" you are likely to have
ongoing issues if you do not have those parts replaced.

P S I have no idea what the accumulator is!!
It is not an automatic,

Thanks for your response

The common rail to which the pump, injectors, and pressure sensor connect is sometimes referred to as an accumulator. It seems that due to the possibility of fuel contamination, the Fiat garage are proposing the replacement of all hp parts.

OK, then I would go with what they are suggesting, as the Communicator posted - likely part of the fuel delivery. Sounds like fuel contamination concerns - specially a pump being replaced at such low kilometres.

If fuel contamination is bad enough to warrant HP Pump to be replaced then the Injectors, fuel lines, & all associated parts should be replaced as well as fuel tank clean.
There are two types of HP Pump failure.
#1 is due to contamination getting through the fuel filter. ( Large clean up including injectors but Pump not replaced) there is a secondary screen filter in HP Pump so injectors could be ok.

#2 is major HP Pump failure & metal shavings going through the system. (Pump & complete fuel system replaced) Usually failure is caused by running pump without fuel to lubricate it. Not common on modern engines due to safety devices.

I have had to do a repair as in #2 on a Jeep with the Bosch CP4 pump. (Bosch did end up having a recall due to premature pump failure on some of these)
