Hi Stu,
too bad you SIL's mate didn't knew exactly what he was doing ...
In theory, the motor should have had a current peak that would have blown the protection fuse, OR it overheated and finally cuts the winding or shorted it to ground.
You really need to get the pump out of the car, drain it of any oil, disassemble it from the motor and see if it still rotates freely. While you have the motor off the assembly, connect it to a battery or 12VDC power-supply THRU A LIGHT BULB (this is to limit the current in case of internal shortcut): if the motor start spinning your're safe to reassemble the pump & motor and check again for a short time (there is no oil inside the pump !). If still ok, reassemble everything, fill the reservoir with new selespeed fluid and perform the bleeding/kiss point procedure. Do not forget you have to depressurize the accumulator as well to drain off as much as 'bad mix' as possible.
If the motor alone is not spinning, open it and check what went wrong, but I'm afraid it won't just be the brushes (unless maybe the old motor). You won't find them @ Fiat stealer nor on line (euro part or so), but a good hardware store will probably have what you need ...
Just reading your last post once more: yes there are two fluids in the system: the 'thick' (tutela) one is for the gearbox itself (like a manual one), to lubricate the gears and differential; the second one is hydraulic fluid (Selespeed) that's used by the robot to move the actuators that drive the clutch and the gear lever instead of the human interface (You) ...
Tell us how you get on !!
Edit: Ideally the entire system should be disassembled / cleaned, it's NOT that difficult but you have to be very meticulous ...
BRs, Bernie
