General Driving in snow and ice

Well i've just been for a 60 mile spin in snow and ice, pretty easy to drive in, the Abarth surprised me actually, i thought with it's wide tyres and immense power i would be spinning all over the place, but with the TTC, it helps control wheels spin by braking the wheel that's spinning so you can actually put your foot down without staying in one place.

Can't say i felt the ESP doing much although on a public road, i wasn't trying too hard to get it sideways. There were about 20 LR Defenders parked in the local car park (must have been a forum/owners club meeting) they were all doing HB turns and 4WD drifts, so i joined in, but even with opposite lock on mid drift, i still never felt the ESP. Does the car recognize snow and ice and disengages the ESP in a skid?

The turbocharged engine is also helpful, it means you can pull away in 2nd and keep in 4th or 5th to keep the revs down, even when going up hill. Also, the near bold tyres were great too, even in an emergency stop (after watching the video posted by Maxi, i thought i'd give it a go!) it still pulled up straight with little fuss, and turned in just fine on icy bends with little over/under steer at all, makes me wonder what all the "winter tyre" fuss is about tbh ;)

Great fun, i want more!

Sheet ice here today. Driven in snow & ice lots, but not in the 500 before. Found that the strong tick over meant I could just run with no throttle in 2nd, and use the clutch gently to cut the power if need be.That worked really well on roads which were too slippery to walk on.....

Remeber to clear the snow off to allow the heater to pull in the air to clear the screen too!

After the last few days, I've formed the opinion that the 500 does drive well in the snowy/icy conditions!

Some advice though, sometimes its better not to drive slow and steady... it allows pikeys to jump into the road and try and steal your car.

Try to avoid (by planning ahead) steering and braking at the same time or your car may become a sledge.Try to get to a lower gear as soon as you can to avoid wheel spin.At least double your braking distance..and if you have to brake, use cadence braking, this is where you gently press the footbrake then release then apply again keep doing this till you come to a safe halt.
Oggie.

Can't say I'm particularly impressed with the tyres in the snow.......

It just doesn't have enough traction. Perhaps the heavier front of an Abarth will help. It wasn't totally crap but (more to do with passengers whinging) we didn't end up going over the moors which was probably good in hindsight because it wasn't as surefooted as my 406 was for instance in the same weather.

Is yours conti-sport equipped or something else? I've got the 15" wheels on at the moment with proxes 4 and whilst not winter tyres they're light years ahead of the conti-sports.

i don't know about snow but esp saved my life on a very wet road today. i felt vibrations similar to abs. it quickly got me back into line. if i was driving a pop, i would probably be under the truck coming from the opposite direction.

Mine has Potenza RE050A's on it and just in terms of pure handling whilst coasting (which removes the traction advantage of 4wd) the Falkens on the front and Conti Premium Contact 2's of the wifes Scoob are far better and ditto with my 406 which used to have Pilot Primacy's on the front and Premium Contact 2's on the back.. The 500 just seems to slushoplane for want of a better word far too easy. Perhaps it's the fact that the Premium Contact 2 has huuuuge longitudinal channels which seem to help.

Looking at the Proxes 4 they sure have an interesting tread design!

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Crap. I broke my own rule about not discussing tyres.

I have ESP, Dualogic and winter tires on my Fiat 500 1.2. This weekend i drove 500 km in snowy swedish weather and I was impressed with the cars performance. I drove at a top speed of 130 km on the motorway and the car seemed steady under varios snowy surfaces. The only drawback was starting from a stand still on an icy patch, had to start in second gear to get the car going.

My 500 is appauling in the snow TBH. Models with ESP might be better.

Even the crappy "cut the power" type of traction control (eg Ford Puma) would help!

the car isn't at fault - learn to use your right foot (y)

Says the man with winter tyres :p

I was being very gentle with the throttle yesterday but was getting wheelspin in a few places and I know from my limited experience that the other cars I've driven in snow have handled it better because they've not had such wide tyres compared to the weight of the car.

i could cope fine with slick tyres - 'cos I am a driving god :ROFLMAO:
