Technical Dreaded cold start :(

Battery! Grinding is normally the starter motor not engaging fully!

Edit: Sam, get a friend with a car and Jump lead your car, see if you have the same problem starting, if not it would point to a battery more than anything else.

the problem is it is not every time and highly depends on the weather. if it is a warm ish day, its fine. if it is cold like when i go to work, it MAY grind. However less now we have had some warm ish weeks.

Its just so hard to pin point

- sometimes it puffs into life
- sometimes it squeaks (which sounds like a belt)
- somtimes the whole car shakes from the engine doing something weird
- sometimes it grinds
- sometimes it is fine

this is why its so hard to pin point what is wrong, but like you said, grinding usually is the starter motor not engaging properly so the battery is probably the place to look after the map sensor.

If you bought it from the seller Elliot listed there should be no issue in returning it for a replacement

Cold weather will affect the power in the battery, less reaction within the as the cold normally slows reactions. (Same sense that we work best at 37C and pretty much nearly die if we reach 42C)

Cold weather = less cranking amps = failure to engage starter properly.

Warm/warmer weather = normal/sufficient cranking amps = Engine starts

Based on the age of the battery I really would look at replacing that first

when you had the battery checked did you just get the voltage checked? was any load put on the battery to test it?

nope just the voltage, a test i did do was start the car with lights stereo etc on. The lights didnt dim.

Just measured mine then looked at thats measurments and it was fine mate.

Seems to have fixed my issues of taking longer to start, flashing millage every now and again etc.

so yeah go for it! obviously if it doesn't fix it, go for a new battery as I will be doing in a few days.

read the guide on fitting the map sensor if youre not sure

UPDATE: new map sensor arrived today as a replacement. Same error. Something else must have gone wrong unless i really do need a new battery

I had a new battery and it didnt fix it, did you try the ignition on, then of then start? Worked in my mates?

yeah mate its done nothing. its not grinded for a while but still puffs into life.

Dont know if you read but im now trying to get rid of the engine management light.

I get the error 'sensor circuitry malfunction' after replacing the map sensor.

Iv had two off the guy on ebay and both cause engine management light to come on so im baffled.

Going to try with my old one when it stops raining and see if it goes off.

Update 2:

Just refitted old map sensor, error still there. What's going on? obviously iv upset something whilst replacing it.

I cant help but notice the old sensor has an orange bit (looks like a resistor) whilst the new one doesnt?

Again, the original is now bringing up the error.
