General Door Mirror Selection

General Door Mirror Selection

My Motor home is Right hand drive and has long arms. Thanks to a Black Van man in the Yorkshire dales Ive had the oportunity to see if a medium arm mirror would fit. Having read about other Rapido owners doing the same with sucess, ie the long arm sticks out too much., i decided medium arm was the correct choice.
CHOICE is the word, So many questions to answer, in my case Right hand drive ,drivers side, temperature sensor , electric movement mirrors, heated mirrors. Prices vary from £83 to £271 excluding Fiat £400 plus. So I bought one £83 Ebay 5W indicator ALternative has a 16W indicator £191 which do i need? 5W will do. (or will it?)
I fit the new one, fits OK the mirrors work and so does indicator, ok its making a noise and flashing quicker than normal and theres an error measage on the display. So i realy did need a 16W version, no problem 3 days later a new indicator assembly arrives 8 quid, a damned sight cheaper than buying correct assembly in first place. there are 2 screws holding the indicator in position, these are normaly hidden behind the mirror so just move mirror to extreames to get access. Need to use existing bulb holder to use the larger bulb. The orange capped version is the new one that uses a white bulb, the 5W has a orange bulb. The 18W bulb doesnt fit through the 5W hole. XXXXXX CanBus I didnt think there would be choice of Wattages. So many options to get it wrong. At least now I have a spare temperature sensor. Dont fall down same trap/ be prepared to buy an indicator assembly. Note you will also need a bulb holder and bulb.

Long arm or medium arm. The 2 photos position is taken using no paralax, the habitation door is open to make sure im not cheating (with door closed there would be a small amout of arm showing.

Have you by any chance been having "fun". Over five years ago, I had to replace mirror and quarterlight onmy x244. A VGC quartelight came from Ebay, but a mirror was definately "used", and returned. A mid price range mirror came with the cable exiting the mirror in the wrong place. I had to file a slot in a stiffening rib to route it into the door. All worked OK, but the mirror glass seems to vibrate when driving the vehicle. That's life!

The 16W bulb is specified for the XL and Tempo Libero (the latter used by many motorhome converters) versions. Why that should be isn't documented, but I suspect it is to do with overall visibility on larger vehicles.

I've been through the same process with the offside mirror, having had one demolished by white-van man in Devon. My experience of the cheaper replacement was such that I eventually replaced that with an OE one from Coastal Motorhomes (at a somewhat cheaper price than that currently advertised). The original replacement was far from stable!).

Take care with the replacement indicator bulb and lens - the 16w (white) bulb in both my original and first replacement had started to melt the internal orange shroud - the replacement being bad enough to be commented on, but not failed, at MOT time.

The new OE one has the fully clear internals (no internal orange shroud) but has had the 5W white capless bulb replaced by a similar-sized 16W amber one. When I ordered from Coastal, and had to 'phone them, they said they'd had a lot of problems with the "melting" and no longer sold that version (don't know whether it's true, but my mentioning it was of no surprise to them).

(I've also, like you, retrieved the temperature sensor from the originally destroyed one).
