I have had my greyhound cross for 7 years now and he has lived here with 2 cats absolutluly fine. Infact they pick on him more than him chasing them.
He is the most loyal and docile dog i have ever owned and would quite happily own another.

good on you for looking into a rescue dog, these centres do fantastic jobs mostly out the good of their heart.

In sunderland there are these two bouncers (big hard massive blokes) who raise breed dogs, both of them are sound as anything. oneday a woman that worked in our shop got a english boxer (I think thats what its called, long noised ugly thing) and it had a deformed leg, yet still the breeder had allowed it to live and furthermore sell it to her at top wack (talking nearly a grand here). the two bouncers got involved, and lets say, it hit the papers, we knew who it was, but we would never tell as 1) they are legends, they stand up for good citezens and dish it out to the ****s aroundhere 2) don't cross them:p

as for dogs, something like a cocker spanial would be awesome, they have almost infinate amounts of energy, are a fairly rugged/babyproof dog, they are intelligent enough to keep you very happy, and won't destroy stuff because they can't figure out how to catch their tail.

WE were going to get a spaniel, but an awesome collie litter turned up, so we had one:cool:
and oh what a mistake that was... see picture...

he's a very intelligent dog, he'll figure stuff ou before you do, I'm sure he can drive aswell!! I've seen the car move and dog hairs on the seat:p ;)

he is ridiculously fit, he now works (and has been for the last 2year, he's 4.5 years old) on the farm over the road, as we simply can't dish out anywhere near enough excersize between FOUR!!! of us:eek:

he is taken to the beach 5/7 days a week, and whilst we walk maybe 2-3miles each time, he probably runs around 10miles!! up and down and up and down at full pelt chasing seaguls, he just doesn't like them on HIS beach, he'll also swim about 150yards out to see (even if its really rough) and chase them off there aswell!!!).
come back, collapse in the back of the car, 10mins rest on way home, and then happily do th same again:eek:

I would say the majority of rescue dogs respond well to a kind and loving owner and so it gives back 10 fold the love you give it cos it's just glad to be looked after.

Thats exactly right.

Me and my other half have only ever had rescue dogs, it started when we was wanting a yorkshire terrier, and we saw an ad in the loot for one 'to a good home', we went round there, conditions were terrible, the dog [sarah] had teeth falling out due to bad diet [scraps of human food mainly] and was ridden with fleas, she was such a lovely little thing, we just could not have gone out of there and have left it with that owner, we took it, she got treated for all her problems, she was old we knew that, she was a timid but loyal loving dog, we gave her her best 3 years.

Then there was Chloe, we got her from Leigh Dogs Home near Wigan, just off A580, that was 12 years ago [we think she was 3 then], she is still a spring chicken and possibly the best dog ever, initially we thought she was a beardie cross, but we now think she is a tibetian cross. Dont know why she was in there, it wasnt up for question.

Chloe

About 4 months ago we got a sausage dog from a dachshund rescue place in sheffield, no pics but he also was 3, he is a full pedigree but rescue places dont give you papers, his owner had died. He is a cheeky little chappy and a perfect lap dog for the missus.

One thing to remember about dog homes or rescue places, if they are reputable they will always allow the animal to be returned, if things do not go to plan, a happy owner is just as important as a happy animal.

If there is a certain breed you are after, you can bet there will be somebody who specialises in rescue of them, as I said above, you wont get papers but you wont need them if all you want is a happy doggie, many centres are online now, if they dont have what you want initially, ask them they will know of other places or contacts.

We have also had a cat from a local cats home, and in the past many guinea pigs, rabbits, and even 3 ducks!!!! and a daft bird!!

she does look like a beardie. We had one when I was little...lovely dog, learnt my brother to walk by holding onto his fur.

I feel like im going round in circles with the dog hunt. Some of the places are happy to just hand over if u had 2 forms of i.d. and can pay. To me thats not a good thing. Mill rescue had an open day sunday but the dogs im interested in aren't coming till tomorrow now. Im havin all the fence ripped down and replaced ready...just hope its done by the time my pooch is ready for adoption. As I said before, i'd really like a cav king charles...but its like mission impossible. Hopefully the one mill rescue have will be right for us...if not, then god knows. its a little disheartening...yet yobs and idiots get animals so easily then abuse them.

The mut we looked at initially is a bichon frise and spaniel cross...i love the fact that he looks like a beardie in the face :) we'll see.

Ive thought and thought about it so much im beginning to doubt my reasons for wanting a bloody dog in the first place lol. Tho I do that with everything...i wanted to sell my car yesterday..im over it now tho

He is GORGEOUS! Ive considered a greyhound but I dont know if I could give it as much time as it needs, exercise wise

is a 6yr old cavalier king charles past it? theres one going free

Not at all :) Average life expectancy would be approx 12-14 years I reckon.

Might be a bit stuck his ways, but if you can give it a good loving home and it will fit in with your kid, etc. then it may be worth going for it :)

greyhounds dont need much exercise, they are lazy:)

I found this to be very true, our greyhound (ex racing dog, just over 3 years old) was THE laziest dog evAr! I used to walk her every day and she ran around the garden for a little while each day, that's all she needed. We had to get rid of her though as we all work full time jobs and couldn't give her the love and attention she deserved :(

She didn't like our cat though... :chin:

Small dogs tend to live longer, maybe 12-16 in some cases. 6 Years old is not old for a dog, bear in mind the dogs a "puppy" for 2/3 years.

Re dogs with cats....... I think we all seem to be forgetting that it is cats that are territorial. Our dog gets more hassle from the cats than he gives, but those cats are harmless to us, (cross Staff/Rotty btw).

in terms of an ideal dog, don't think you'll get a single answer as we'll all love our own certain breeds we had.

However, Labs are one of the most intelligent, and are nice and calm (when fully grown) Alsations are great, but some can become over protective.

Also, any breed is capable of being ideal for you, dog's have human-like nature, in that all behave uniquely.

Hope you get a good one.

Carl.

I agree with this totally. We've had a couple of rescue dogs now. Our first one Judy died aged 15 and we decided that we needed a replacement. The dog we opted for was one that not that many would have taken on. His name is Grouse. He's mainly labrador, but of mixed breed so is about 3/4 the size of a labrador. I'm not sure of his background previous to coming to us, but he would have been about 9 months old. He had been in an accident and I think the home was waiting to see if anyone was interested in him before operating to properly fix his hind leg. We had to wait 5 weeks before we could take him home. He's a peculiar looking dog in that he's got no tail so he generates a lot of interest when he's out for a walk. He's great with kids (but personally I'd never leave any dog with a child). He's very loveable and is a big lick (yuck)... He definitely knows that he's been lucky.

He definitely knows that he's been lucky.
That reminded me of a rescue cat that we got here, it went back to Scotland to live with Mrs Rs family. Whenever that cat saw me it made a beeline for me and said a big purry hello. Everyone said they were sure it knew I saved it . On rescue dogs I would not go for one of the brighter breeds when you dont know their history, some neighbours of ours got an Alsation which must have been mistreated, it bit someone when out walking and eventaully was put down. No one blamed them but you can imagine how upsetting this was all round. The other really bright dog, as noted on here, is the Border Collie, these are at home as working dogs on big open livestock farms, no wonder they go stir crazy if kept in a city flat.

My dad has warned me against collies, he says they are mental and get really naughty when they're bored....tho if they're used to so much more then its not a great surprise is it.

I phoned the vet about the cavalier king charles. she said its not past it...BUT that they are prone to MVD mitral valve disease or something to do with their hearts...I knew this already but apparently the risk increases as you approach 10yrs of age...so I decided against the 6yr old. I didnt even go to see it because I knew I would want to take him home.

This dog thing is taking over my brain!!! haha. The kennels emailed me to say the dogs are coming over from ireland tonight *yay* The fence man hopefully has some good news for me tonight and if the dogs im waiting on are no joy then its off to the greyhound rescue place :)

For anyone thats interested...WE FOUND A DOG! I went to visit the pooch on the first page (been waiting for him to come over from ireland) Hes beautiful, really nice, friendly little lad. Got my family bday meal tho tonight so we're going to pick him up Monday. Gives me chance to get him a bed and some toys etc today too. We couldn't fit him in the car yesterday as I went with my bfs mom to pick up her new pooch....All the way from Wednesbury, to Aldridge then to Lincoln for a bloody dog lol.

We got lost on the way there so it took like 4hrs! Only 2hrs on the way back. Bloody sat nav went all wrong, took us on a massive detour and then died. I think we're gona need a miracle to find it again monday, especially seeing as my bf is driving and hes never been before. If you never hear from me again, its because im lost/stranded somewhere in between here and Lincoln :p

Heres my boy...called sammie, 15mths old I think. House trained apparently. Bichon frise x (not 100% sure what with till we look at his cards tomorrow). He doesnt seem to know his name, I think its just what the pound in ireland called him...Sooooo, hes getting a new name. Not sure what yet tho

Thank you for all your help people! :) *kisses*
