well i thank those who answered , the mechanic did use a green coolant , so I was mistaken , the plastic container had been stained red and the coolant looked green , as for a low level apparently it is normal for the fluid level to drop a bit when changed over , my error I was concerned though for my baby ducato

Water.. obviously VERY inexpensive
But has no protection from Corrosion or Freezing
Traditiinally it would be a EthyleneGlycol chemical coolant that is mixed with water
Modern is termed O.A.T.
O : Organic..so more 'environmentally friendly'
Traditional is Blue in colour.. you could remove a hose.. catch the grubby water in a pan
If its contaminated.. dispose of it
If its clean looking.. add a Concentrated Coolant in the correct mix ration and replace the hose and refill
O.A.T. coolant is Red or Orange and is 'longlife'...lasts @5 years
Its NOT added to water.. so you want to dump the water and add just the RED coolant
Water may have been added JUST to check for leaks... if the level has held that is good
( a refilled system, will have 'air pockets' as you drive the coolant circulating will chase out this air.. resulting in the Level in the expansion tank dropping)
OAT (red/orange) lasts longer, but how long apparently depends on what vehicle you put it in
Apparently its the corrosion protection, not the freezing protection, that wears out.
-- and how long the corrosion protection lasts depends on what metals are used in the engine
So its probably best to go by the vehicle manufacturers recommendation, rather than the coolant manufacturers recommendation
I never changed the coolant in my X2/50 because it wasn't in the service schedule.
If you do change the coolant make sure you know how to bleed the system - I have heard of people not bleeding the system properly resulting in hot spots and engine damage.
hey thank you, the mechanic only used water for the new water pump , and after 150km it was beginning to run low. thank you for letting me know . big thank you
