have a Fiat Brava which was brought about 4 months ago. I am having problem with the car when it comes to starting the car. I thought it was the battery but coudn't establish the problem so went to Fiat and they needed a Red key which I didn't know about and they said £1000 to get new keys etc.

I serched on the Internet and found www.codeman.org and they will be able to sort out red keys for less then £200 but inorder to sort out keys I need the ECU number http://www.codeman.org/fiatecu.html and the Code Block http://www.codeman.org/fiat_code_block.html . But I was unable to find the both number. I phoned the guy up but he was saying whatever was shown on his web site. But like I said coudn't find it. Is there any chance anybody would actually know where they are located. If you do could you please post here or e-mail me please.

My car is a Fiat Brava 80 SX, 5 Door Hatchback, Registration Plate: W263 M**.

Please do help me its URGENT, AND THANKS IN ADVANCED.

I'm sure all mk2 ECU's (like yours) are located at the rear of the engine bay, backwards from the battery...

If not, the only other place i have seen them located is under and left of the glove box, under the door trim panel.

The code box is inside the fuse box (drivers right knee). You need to undo the screw and half remove it to read the number.

Hope this helps...

When it starts its ok the car but when is dosn't start thats it. If I leave the car for about half an hour then the car will start fine.

I have changed the battery, and no result so I thought take it to main dealers and they said need red key inorder to check the car in terms of the engine etc. And thats where this www.codeman.org comes into the picture.

Me dad was saying he went to Fiat and they wanted to check something regarding the engine basically it might me in the engine. And thats the reason they needed the red key.

If anything thats the reason I want a red key plus when it comes to selling the car will need a red key.

Your ECU is the silver rectangle to the top right of your engine cover on a 2000 onwards car. Its held on by 4 x 10mm nuts and has two big black connectors on it. The number they need will probably be 0281 or 0261 ending in 087.
You dont need a red key for a diag or to cure any mechanical fault though...

Right thanks for your info still, Can I ask you what is the red key needed then. The blue key is used to open/close the car so where does the red key come into the picture.

The red key is used to program new blue keys into the ECU.

Your starting problem is most likely going to be something quiet simple.

Just spoke to me dad and he saying that he thinks its not a Machanical fault and we think its a electrical fault.

And Fiat asked for a red key and they also said they will use red key and check car on a machine of some sort to see if fault is shown.

I am beginning to think about this now. I think I will need to make a trip down to the Main Dealers

Check the Electrics

I had a problem like this and it turned out to be poor electrical contacts.

As you turn on the ignition you should hear the petrol pump prime. If not then it is usually bad contacts on either the ignition relay or the ignition fuse. If this happens then you can usually get the car to start by jump starting it or leaving it for some random time.

The contacts you need to clean are housed in the engine bay under a plastic cover on the bulk head. If you clean the contacts on the fuses and the relay under this cover the car will run fine and you may even find better fuel economy.

Re: Check the Electrics

Thanks for your reply, yeah when the car is left for random time intervals and when we try again the car starts fine. But when it doesn't start, doesn't matter how many times we try doesn't start.

Re: Check the Electrics

One thing I experienced a few days ago. I had the same problem with starting the car. And at the present time the car was stationary on a hill. We pushed the car down the hill and tried to start the car. The car just jerked but didn't start.

Re: Check the Electrics

Just a random thought, it wouldn't be a dodgy connection on the fuel cut off switch?

Re: Check the Electrics

When it fails can you hear the fuel pump prime for 5 secs or the Idle valve reset (small whir from under the hood) when you turn the ignition on for the first time?

If not then it is the electrics and most likely the Ignition Fuses (5 & 25A) under the bonnet (center/back of engine under cover beside relay).

This only happens if you leave about 1 minute between ignition tries (remove the key and wait a minute).

When it doesn't start you should try jump starting it(from another car not from a jump start kit). This should work as the voltage when jump starting the car is higher and should overcome the starting problem.

It is less likely to be the fuel cutoff as it is not happening when the car is running.

Re: Check the Electrics

If it was a blown/dodgey fuse it would not start at all or stall when its running.

Re: Check the Electrics

If it was a blown fuse then the car would not start (correct). If the fuse contacts have corroded then it would not start due to lower starting voltage (10-12v due to starting current) but may run after it has started (14V due to alternater charge). Obviously as the contacts corrode further it will stop running completely.

This is why I said that jump starting it usually works as you get a full 14v from the other car.

Anyway give it a go and see, if it doesn;t work then you have lost nothing.

This is a common misdiagonosed problem with Fiats (why they put unprotected fuses open to the elements is beyond me).
