DOBLO Gearbox

Hello all I am a new member here. I am just about to bring home a 2005 DOBLO 1.9 JTD. I bought. i got the car for a good price as it will not select 4th gear. my question is are these common to gearbox faults? as on ebay gearboxes are very expensive second hand or do the change cable give problems
Either way I will repair it but was just wondering
