I've got a TomTom, been very handy.
Use it when I'm going to places I've never been, or not too sure on the way, also great for if a road is closed, dont have to look out for the diversion signs.
What I would love it to do, add a load of addresses that you need to go to...and it takes you to them in the best way...was dropping of stuff for mum recently, and would have been so much better lol

Acquired my Dad's old Road Angel (which was given to him by my Uncle who didn't like it lol).
It's pretty crap. Very vague in directions, so, I make sure to have a fair idea of where I'm going first (still doesn't stop the occasional brain fart though lol). It also causes interference with my radio
. Tried using one of those core filter thingies, has helped a little, still bloody annoying though!!
I also have a road atlas in the car (rear of passenger seat). Actually, I have 2 - one is a 2000 one, and my sister bought me a 2009 one for Christmas lol (forgot to remove the old one lol).
To be honest, I usually use the Sat Nav to stop my Dad wittering. This is despite the fact he's spent the past 21 years saying "No child of mine will be able to get lost, they'll be able to use a sodding map properly!!" (I can navigate using a road atlas/A-Z, and just to wind my Dad up, using Charts...for navigating at sea lol).

I've had a tomtom one for over 12 months now and i think i've only used it twice

Sat-Navs are a rare commodity here in this part of the world though it is gaining popularity lately.
I do not use one, and have no plans of having one in future, since I know most of the roads around my state, and if in need, I can always stop and ask people! Well, it is the way of finding a place here!

I'd officially say no. The drink & drive laws are a bit different than Europe. In Europe, I guess a certain amount of Alcohol is allowed and if you cross that limit, you're in trouble.
Here in India, if you're caught driving under the influence of alcohol, no matter how low the count is, you're in for trouble. That involves charging a case against you for drink & drive. You will have to either pay monetary penalty or be behind the bars for a short sentence.
Having said that, the law is not enforced strictly unlike Europe. Most of the time, you can get away with a bit of drinking - that can involve bribing the cops, proclaiming your political influence or whatever.
The police only check for drunken drivers mostly at night, and that too in cities. The checking will increase on some days of the week, like Saturday night.

Out of interest how does that work if someone has taken medication that flags up a small amont of alchole on the breathaliser?

Hmm.. Good question. It depends on your ability to convince them that it is the medicine. :bang:
But, most of the medicines that contain alcohol has a sedative effect and driving anyway should be avoided right. For example, Benadryl.
I have a cheapy cheap Binatone sat nav that I only use in strange towns/cities to find addresses I would have no hope of finding otherwise.... safer than trying to read a map while driving.
Never had to use it on the open road yet, I simply navigate by road numbers.... plan a route in advance and check which roads I will be using and towns I will be going past, never failed me yet.

Have a Garmin...its good for finding streets 4 counties away but crap at taking you the fastest route.

I consider electric windows, ABS and central locking to be luxuries; what the hell would I want a sat-nav for? I was my school's orienteering champion for 5 years in a row for Christ's sake.
I have a Becker and it's spot on. I still try to rely on maps whenever possible though - I have a load of A-Zs, but if I'm going somewhere I don't have a map for the Becker is indispensible
