The drink & drive laws are a bit different than Europe. In Europe, I guess a certain amount of Alcohol is allowed and if you cross that limit, you're in trouble.
Here in India, if you're caught driving under the influence of alcohol, no matter how low the count is, you're in for trouble. That involves charging a case against you for drink & drive. You will have to either pay monetary penalty or be behind the bars for a short sentence.
Having said that, the law is not enforced strictly unlike Europe. Most of the time, you can get away with a bit of drinking - that can involve bribing the cops, proclaiming your political influence or whatever.
The police only check for drunken drivers mostly at night, and that too in cities. The checking will increase on some days of the week, like Saturday night.
