As welll as a multipla we also own a freelander TD4 for towing our caravan and have this week serviced it for the 1st time.
Whilst looking for info regards to where the fuel filter is i came across some info that the freelander has a turbo vent filter (i think thats what they called it) and when this is blocked it causes diesel freelanders to blow out black smoke has anyone ever heard of one of these before and also is there one on our Multipla JTD as we still have black smoke from exhaust after cleaning EGR, replacing Fuel filter, Air filter and glowplugs.
I thought that this may be the problem as to why still blowing black smoke unless the injectors need replacing but was hoping no to replace them as i imagine they are very expensive to replace or can they just be cleaned, if so please could you advise how to do this?

Regards
Chris

All help appreciated.

you can buy injector cleaner from people such as redex , you chuck a measure in the tank and presto injectors get cleaned. good to treat tank every now n again works for me ,also lowers emmisions for test , put it in give it a good blat ,done . hope of some help.

Thankyou for your response, I have tried Redex before but made no difference, but since then i have cleaned the EGR and pipes so maybe now it might work, but would really like to know if they can be removed, cleaned (what with) and replaced save me buying new ones.

But am now going outside to add some redex to the tank ready for the journey to work in the morning.

I have just bought a 02 115 ELX, whilst one of my work colleagues was following me home from work he noticed mine was blowing out black smoke under acceleration. He is an old school mechanic and his diagnosis is over-fuelling, he said hes not sure on newer cars what the cure is. I hadnt noticed at all , it still pulls really well and is just as economical as our 8V MK2 Punto. Maybe its a go on the diagnostic to get it sorted.
Also i have just ordered a second key for the Multipla ( i got £150 extra off the price of the car), and i can confirm that a "normal" key is £155 with programming ( 1/2 hour labour )and the remote key is about an extra £100.
Anyway, really loving the car and the kids & breadknife absolutley love it!!!
I showed it to a few of my mates in the pub and they couldnt believe what you can get for £3000

Congratulations on your purchase.

I too have been told the system is over fuelling and have been told to get the fuel system calibrated (this was by a mechanic with 35 years experience), this is what i plan to do next once i have some free cash as tax, insurance and MOT are all due in a fornight .

Anyway I have so far done the following:

Cleane EGR Valved (so badly clogged I was surprised it let ant gases through),
Changed Glow plugs, air filter, fuel filter and oil filter (not that changing the oil filter would make any differecne as to the black smoke.
Cleaned the pipe work connected to the EGR, which whilst doing so I noticed someone had drilled a hole about 5mm in size in the brass coloured pipie conected directly to the EGR, so will have buy one of the direct from fiat £22+ vat, as this may be causing black smoke due to air increase (i dunno).

I have also read somewhere online that the pipe that runs across the back of the front bumper also causes black smoke if split. (still need to check mine).

And last night as mentioned above i've added some more Redex to the tank.
Which having done all this, has, actually made a huge difference to the amount of smoke it now blows out.

I have only owned it since last May so still llearning about the probs u get with a multi.

Cos of this the wife hates it but me and the kids love it. :D

Let me know if u get yours sorted, what it was and how much to fix.

Think im gonna name ours "THE SQUID".

Lol.

Sure its not the maf sensor playing up? I think these can also cause black smoke if faulty as they send the wrong data to the ecu.

If I disconnect the MAF sensor will this stop the black smoke, since doing all the work mentioned above the smoke has become less apart from when revving hard it the pours out.
