Hi
Looking to install a brand new out of the box sub soon into my enclosure.
Silly question maybe but do brand new subs need to be played at low - medium volumes for a few hours to break them in or loosen the rubber?
cant remember if I heard this somewhere before..

Cheers

yes

more like a few days most high end equiptment needs around 30 hours

Just use them. Running in is not a process you have any control over or need to do anything special about. Anyone saying otherwise is talking shite.

Speakers will run in no matter if you play them quitely or loudly or anywhere inbetween. Its just a natural process that requires no intervention.

Slight difference of opinion here.
Anyone care to add their thoughts..

Just use them as normal, after a while they will 'loosen' up by themselves...

Yup, it just happenes on its own, like with a new pair of shoes.

How many people sit infront of the TV breaking in a new pair before they wear them? :)

OOOHHH youll get blisters Tom ;)

so tom ur saying if he runs them at full wack from the second they are installed they wont blow!

peter if you want to run them full wack on the frst day then feel free but most audio retailers will be shitty about taking them back

i would say better off safe than sorry but its your decision at the end of the day

i know that roaford equiptment says in the instructons/box how long the running in period should be

Providing your amp is kicking out a clean signal devoid of any distortion, your sub should be fine to run at any level whilst running in.

If you are a bass or distortion freak and max out your system, no matter what amp or speakers you use, underpower your system. Your speakers should be rated over twice the power of your amp. You also need to spend the $30 to $100 to have a technician put protection in your speakers by in stalling a polyswitch, light bulb, breaker or com bination. If you want clean and moderately loud volumes with plenty of dynamic range, do as JBL suggests and overpower your system by using an "amplifier that will provide more power than you will need." Be careful not to drive your amp into clipping.
