Does anyone know if the distributor on the 1.1ie is the same as for the 1L (post-1988 model)?

Went to a scrapyard the other day and took one off a 1.1ie. It looks exactly the same as the one in my 1L - however when I tried to fit it, it didn't seem to line up correctly and on tightening the nuts the damn thing snapped.

I then tried to strip it down to take the amplifier module off as I have a feeling that's where the problem lies. This seemed to go OK and on refitting the original distributor (with amplifier from the new one) it started up and seemed to be fine until I got a few hundred yards down the road when the engine died completely.

On examination, the wires connecting the amplifier module had snapped. I can only think I must have made a mistake re-assembling it.

I will now need another distributor but as I say, I now have doubts about finding the correct one.

As always, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm getting really fed up with this now.[:(!]

if we`re talking about the f.i.r.e. engine they are all the same. The problem when fitting it in place is to line up the drive correctly as it cane easly fit 180 degress off,and also the rubber seal is sometimes difficult to replace.Y don`t u try to find a new module it`s cheap.

Thanks for the reply. I have bought a new distributor now and it slotted in perfectly first time! Does this mean it is definitely lined up properly (i.e is not 180 degrees out)?

On closer examination of the old part, the problem was not just that the wires had snapped - this had been caused by the rotor arm breaking off. The amplifier was easy enough to replace but I had obviously not aligned all the mechanical parts correctly - this is something you obviously have to take care with if you are overhauling a distributor. Especially for a novice like me.

Ah well, you learns by yer mistakes as they say!

Hold it, there are at least two distibutors available.

One is made by Marelli and the other is by Ducellier.

They can be interchanged, but as well as the distributor make sure you pick up the associated plugs and cables as they vary.

Martin

Fix It Again Tony!
Would swap for X19, Montecarlo Spider or GT.i.e in average/poor condition! Scottish based would be nice.

Yes, I have the "wrong" one on mine, my grandpa modified it for me, taken off the same engine, 6 month older car (same model etc.) just didn't distributor!

But it is easy to tell at a glance if you are replacing the right one - that's what I was getting at. The Marelli one (used on the Fire engines I think) has a white cap, I was just wondering if there were any subtle differences in similar looking versions of this part. It seems not - just a case of making sure it is on correctly (flush with the mounting points on the engine) before tightening the nuts up as the clamp plate is aluminium and breaks easily.

I think I hadn't lined up the drive properly as Anton said - I'll know next time.:I
