I lent my van to my bro nd now it is shagged. It was beggining to hesitate on acceleration, holding cak and not responding , noe it eventually starts with plumes of white smoke. It will start all day after that un ess it is left alone and really cold. It is almost undrivable as it almost chokes itself and will not have high revs.

Engine?

If it's diesel, worn glow plugs.

Worn or tired glow-plugs would cause poor cold starting but the engine would run fine once started, not the low revs issue the OP has stated.

Is the turbo running? Worth a look at the EGR too IMO, then on to the various sensors. I assume the air filter is clean....?

Thanks for the replies. i should have been more clear. It is a 97 TD. The air filter is dirty, I tried to start it without the air filter just to see, but it wouldn't start at all. It's on its way to be broken as soon as the insurance is sorted, but would still like to solve the problem. I am going to try a clean air filter.

If it's a pre '95 Diesel, there are no sensors, turbo and EGR at all....!!
If it's gasoline, there's also no turbo.....!!

 FAIL! Your point is?

I see its a 97 with a turbo... or havent you seen that yet? :D
